A seven year old boy was at the center of a county courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy had a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Dallas Cowboys, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Murray Cut for Not Taking a Pay Cut

Hours before his $3M salary became guaranteed, the Ain'ts cut productive veteran RB Latavius Murray because he refused to take a pay cut because of how productive he was in relief of injured RB Alvin Kamara last year.

Being good just isn't enough these days, I guess....

Now there's talk of teams having to FORFEIT games over COVID, rather than just postponing them. Wow.

Now? That's been the case since the protocols for this season were first released.

The NFL jumped through hoops last season to get games played but they're not doing that this year. The impact will be the greatest for unvaccinated players and those players are putting their teams at risk. This is especially true for QBs like Wentz and Cousins. If I understand correctly, a close contact for an unvaccinated player late in the week could put that player out for 2 games.

It's their choice but choices have consequences.

I knew about Cousins having issues with the mandate, but not Wentz. I hadn't heard that the decision had been made months ago; just saw a link about it today. It kinda makes sense for me...IF the league put out the guidance in plenty of time before the season started. A sudden decision to do that would lose credibility for me....

I just reviewed the numbering change because I saw an article where Brady was whining about it because nobody will know who to block. Excuse me?!? Back in the day, defenders could wear whatever number they wanted, and blocking assignments were determined by defensive alignment. They still are. Brady's whining just for the sake of whining, IMO. In actuality, the one caveat I'd have for the new liberal jersey numbering would be to open ALL backs, receivers, and specialists to 1-49 and 80-89. I certainly wouldn't mind resurrecting Flutie's 22 and Hadl's 21 at the quarterback position. I might want to balk at bringing back Graham's 60, though, because that's within the 50-70 spectrum still reserved for OLs. I'm not sure why they left the 60s out of what LBers can wear; I've seen some very good LBers wearing 60s. I'm not a fan of 90s for LBers; for me, that should be reserved for NTs (especially 99), but that's beside the point. I have no problems with specialists wearing ANY number; we've seen that in college from the beginning, and it's never been an issue. Eligibility as defined by jersey number has been an offense-only issue from the beginning of that limitation, so Brady's "argument" is a non-sequitur at best. For this year, we might want to do something that should have been done in 2020 that's been done on rare occasions in the NCAA: unlock number 100 for the NFL's 100th anniversary and for any team's 100th anniversary. (West Virginia K Chuck Kinder wore #100 in 1963 to celebrate the State of West Virginia's 100th anniversary, and Kansas K Bill Bell did so in 1969 for the 100th anniversary of the first collegiate football game). Jersey 0 (worn by the Lions' George Plimpton) and 00 (the Raiders' Jim Otto) would also be good numbers to resurrect for EVERYBODY....

Other things from the original rule change announcement that sound interesting are two proposals related to onside kicks:

A limit to the number of receiving team players allowed in the "setup zone" is believed to allow for more onside kicks to be successful. Why not just accept that the first change was bogus, and revert to the original onside kick rule?

With the passage of the first onside kick change, the Eagles tabled a proposal for a "4th and 15" attempt to retain possession. That sounds a lot like the Big3's "Bring the Fire" which replaced officiating challenges and certain free-throw situations. Could be an interesting idea, but I still prefer the original onside kick better.

The owners eliminated pre-season overtime. A good move, but not far enough. For me, it would be better to accept the tie in the regular season as well. Goodell's reduction of regular season OT to 10 minutes and the safety can end it but FG can't made no sense whatsoever. Just restrict OT to the playoffs with the proviso that it's a full 15 minutes, but sudden death doesn't begin until both teams have had a possession. That seems like the fairest way to do it to me. I'm OK with most of the other changes, but I'm not sure about how the NFL is doing VAR. They've never gotten it right, and it doesn't seem like they'll ever get it right, particularly with Goodell in charge....

Trouble Brewing in Tampa?

Apparently, OC Byron Leftwich called a play toward the end of last night's game against the Cowboys. The entire place could hear Tom Brady shout "NO!" to Leftwich; then Brady proceeded to do something else: that play that SHOULD have been called back for a blatant offensive P.I., which wasn't called because NOBODY is going to call a foul against a Brady-quarterbacked team when the game is on the line, no matter how blatant it is.

Will Leftwich try to gig Brady for insubordination? Would Leftwich get away with that? This is a no-win situation for the Bucs. Insubordination is bad, but to blast a QB with the cred of Brady is also bad. In the past, teams let QBs call their own plays, and only sent in specials. OCs started taking this over as offenses grew in complexity and the pressure grew. The problem with that in the last thirty years or so is the prevalence of delay of game penalties or early time outs to stave off delay of game penalties as OCs have waffled in their decision-making. Perhaps it's time to revert to simpler offenses with quarterbacks trained in what to call and when, taking much of the following into account: down and distance, location on the field, score, time outs remaining, on-field personnel groupings, the effect of surprise, etc. So long as what the QB does fits with the OC's philosophy, the time saved in getting the play in (i.e. no delay of game penalties or lost time outs to forestall that) and having to come up with a workaround if the QB comms system goes down (as it often does) would more than make up for an OC's perceived "loss of control." Coach the QB up and let him run with it, ESPECIALLY if he's been playing the game for 20+ years....

Eagles looked strong today. The Alabama connection of Jalen Hurts to DeVonta Smith was on. They still have an embarrassment of riches at TE. They balanced some runs in with the passing and Sanders looked good. The OL (other than Seumalo's constant false starts) was solid; let's hope the geriatrics on the right side stay healthy. D line had terrific pressure. Linebackers were soft in the first half, allowing ATL to gobble up yards on the ground. They're the biggest weakness of the team, as usual. Roseman doesn't know the position exists. Secondary pretty solid. And for the love of God, someone tell Reagor to run north/south on punt returns. Or at the very least, don't run backward, you stupid motherfucker.

First time the Eagles OL has been healthy since Brooks went out with an Achilles in that Saints playoff game where Alshon dropped the ball at the end. If they can stay healthy, it'll be a good year for the Eagles - that's a really good OL when they're all playing. Given the age on the right side of the line, that's probably going to be too optimistic, but at least they have the talent.

Rest of the team looked good. All of a sudden the Eagles have guys who can catch all over the field. Smith is clearly the WR they've been looking for, and he makes the other guys (Reagor for instance) that much better as well. Hurts is certainly a far better QB than people give him credit for, and if the OL plays like that in front of him he'll be even that much better. Falcons suck, and the 49'ers aren't much better, and the NFC East is putrid. Eagles could get a bunch of wins playing against that mediocrity. I'll take it. :thumb:

Tebow is not a NFL quality player - God CLEARLY doesn't want him in the NFL. Timmy must've done something to piss off the Lord...perhaps too much gland-hand special time?

I still go back to the DEN-PIT playoff game. If Tebow wasn't an NFL-quality quarterback, I don't think he would have won that game. Just look at George Plimpton (admittedly a stretch)....

If he was an NFL-caliber QB he'd be an NFL QB. They don't grow them on trees and teams are desperate for them. People thinking that the likes of Tebow and Kapernick are black-balled and QB-needy teams just ignore them are crazy - NFL teams exist to win, and having a great QB is the fastest way to win. Those guys just don't have it or are marginal at best. Once you're marginal, there are a bunch of other options.

Pat Haden was 5'11 and was effective with the Rams before he broke his thumb in '79, leading to Vince Ferragamo taking the Rams to their first Super Bowl. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1977.

Eddie LeBaron 5'7" and was the first QB the Cowboys ever had. In college, he led then-College of the Pacific to an undefeated season (yet snubbed from the bowls) and a victory over a vaunted Cal team in a charity game at the historic Grape Bowl in Lodi the next spring held without coaches. He was a four-time Pro Bowler.

HOFer Sonny Jurgenson was 5'11". Soon-to-be HOFer Russell Wilson is 5'11". Probably the first modern-era Black quarterback, Willie Thrower, was 5'11" when he backed up future HOFer George Blanda in 1953.

Anybody before 1985 or so just doesn't really register for this - OL back in the 1960's could be 240 lbs and that was fine. Modern day Qb's are throwing behind lines where guys are 6'6" or bigger and mostly 300+ lbs - guys today are physical freaks. To have an average size regular person playing behind them is significant.

I have to respectfully disagree with you, GF. I think being short could be an advantage, particularly for the mobile zone-read type like Jackson and Mahomes (not saying that they ARE below six feet, as Mahomes is 6'3" and Jackson is 6'2"). They could hide under the behemoth OLs so that the defense couldn't see what they're doing; if you can't see the QB, it's much harder to tackle him. On the other hand, such QBs would have to stop the major malfunction of most modern QBs today: handing the ball off and just standing there. In such a case, they've not only just told the defense what the play is, but they're sitting ducks for a monster hit. The fact that such a hit would draw a flag is meaningless compared to the toll the hit would have on him. The hits one takes during a play don't really hurt as much as those taken when at a standstill. Such a height might cause a problem with the three-step quick passing game, but five- and seven-step drops (usually associated with medium- to long-range routes) shouldn't be much of an issue. And one can always run old-school halfback option passes when necessary, though those seem to have been phased out for some reason.
