I was just looking at the old 5-3 defense, which I've always liked because it's good at stuffing the run. Sure, it's weak when a modern offense comes out empty with five wide. It seems to me that the base 5-3 is quite similar to a 3-4 with the outside backers aligning on the line outside the ends and the strong safety aligning in a robber technique. Does that sound right to you? If that's the case, especially if your Sam backer is a hybrid type, stopping the Rice slant and the Reno and China/Crash routes should be fairly easy.
Does that sound about right?
