I don't really see anything that happened in the 20th century that can compare.
Maybe the 1960 Gold Medal team?

Great team, but the USA was coming off a Silver Medal in 1956.

A weak Olympics for the US overall. I'm sure you mean the hockey team, but Eric Heiden produced five golds in speed skating. That was our ENTIRE haul of gold at that particular Olympics. In fact, we only got four silvers (speed skating, figure skating, and skiing) and two bronzes (speed skating and figure skating). Pretty weak, particularly in view that we boycotted the Summer Olympics that year.
:suspicious: Casey, you need to just stop posting about sports.

Winter Olympics Gold Medals for US:

1972 - 3
1976 - 3
1980 - 6
1984 - 4
1988 - 2
Meh. Perhaps YOU should stop posting about sports, 89. It was a weak ERA in winter sports overall for the US, one that didn't end until 2002, when we exploded for 10 golds and 34 overall medals. That trend continued in 2006 (9 gold, 25 medals overall), 2010 (9 gold, 37 overall), 2014 (9 gold, 28 overall), and 2018 (9 gold, 23 overall). Sure, a lot of that renewed dominance has to do with the inclusion of "Winter X Games" style events, but we ARE doing very well right now....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

 1980 Gold total was a high mark for years and years around it. It was NOT a weak Olympics compared to it's peers.

Taking a look at the 20th Century in sport overall, I would say the advancement and acceptance of non-whites in professional sports, followed by the emergence of American football as the national pastime.

Good point. The NFL was strange in that case too. Originally accepting of non-white athletes with Bobby Marshall and Fritz Pollard, then going 20 years without, and then accepting non-whte athletes again after baseball did.

A documentary called BLACK STAR RISING about the black players on THE NFL NETWORK was done yrs ago and a reporter from The Cleveland Plain Dealer said the obvious White players were afraid that they would be relegated to bench warming status by those black guys in the early years of the NFL.
