2020 Motor Racing Thread
Re: 2020 Motor Racing Thread
BTW, does anyone else think that Jussie Smollett made a visit to Talladega this weekend?
NASCAR garages are Fort Knox on racing weekends so some random racist placing a noose in Bubba Wallace's garage undetected is virtually impossible.

Seeing a lot of speculation that the noose was the garage door pull.

Statues being pulled down, NASCAR fans defiantly flying their Confederate flags, MAGA hats, BLM shirts, Antifa, Proud Boys...
All of this is just each side intentionally antagonizing the other

Re: 2020 Motor Racing Thread
There's declining attendance, and then there's just cratering attendance. I think NASCAR is certainly well on target to get rid of the Confederate flag (and probably at least a decade too late), but outside of current events/protests discussions, NASCAR has been on life support now for a couple of years. Like '93 said, a place like Dover has seen a drop of much more than 50%, and they used to have two races and now just have one, and people don't show up to that one race either. Some tracks don't even have races anymore. The sport itself is dying, and it was dying long before there were SJW's looking at the sport.∞∞∞ wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 7:31 pmI think you place too much importance on attendance; attendance for most leagues (except maybe MLS) is on the decline.93henfan wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 6:54 pm
Dover used to draw 135,000 (max capacity) in the stands and another 30K or so in the infield on race weekends. They have since removed over 80,000 seats and still can't sellout. They just gave one of their two race dates up to Nashville Speedway.
NASCAR has been steadily declining for about 15 years. Recent events are simply helping to accelerate the decline.
NASCAR's focus should be growing the streaming experience, which they're doing successfully. That and data analytics is where future money lies. Additionally the car manufacturers, sponsors, networks, and advertisers have been pressuring NASCAR for years to make the sport more inclusive and they likely had a lot to say regarding the rebel flag. Do you think companies today want their brands tied to stuff like that?

Re: 2020 Motor Racing Thread
I don't know if dying is the word. In the end, any sport will be as big or small as the amount of fans it has and NASCAR will always have its fans, even if it means a shrunk down version of itself. If the PBA is sill alive, NASCAR will certainly survive too.GannonFan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2020 7:29 amThere's declining attendance, and then there's just cratering attendance. I'm ok with a smaller series; hopefully it'd mean a return to more variety. NASCAR needs to become like Supercars (again).

Thankfully we're only a week and a half away from the F1 season opener. FInally, some real racing to watch.

This short season will be interesting. Any damage during a hairy start or mechanical failure will be amplified in the standings. Plus, Leclerc looks like worthy competition and those Honda power units at Red Bull are getting better every year.

Now seeing reports that Wallace was briefed about the FBI conclusion yet still went on the View and criticized people for doubting.
