The Bobcat women choked away the outright title, so the WBB crown will be split 3 ways.

Sac's men just beat Portland State in Portland, so there will be no PSU/Montana makeup game Wednesday.

Idaho Fires Zac Claus (Immediately)

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Claus was fired immediately after tonight's loss to Montana, and he won't coach the Big Sky Tournament (Tim Marrion will be the interim). Claus's record was terrible, of course (this was sadly his best season), but I don't understand canning him before the tourney.

Women's Awards

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Back-to-back MVPs for Sac. This one makes more sense, though, since the Hornets tied for first instead of finishing seventh. New this year is the Coach-of-the-Year award being announced along with all the player stuff. I think Campbell & probably Payne were deserving, but not Binford—the Bobcats were expected to be better than last year and they weren't. Joddie Gleason of EWU was a better choice than Binford.

Not often you see the Newcomer of the Year also win MVP...OR see a three-way tie for Coach of the Year. Crazy season....

Or a 3-way tie for first place. 13-5 is also the worst record to ever win the women's Big Sky.

Hornets snag a share of the WBB title. First D1 conference title. Amazing run and well deserved.

Men on the other hand limp into the BSCT after squandering a solid start to the season. Oddly enough, the matchup with Weebs isn't a bad draw for us considering how close our games with them have been.

Velaida Harris Resigns as Weber Coach

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

It sounded like Harris had good energy and players liked her, but it's hard to ignore a 29-116 record. It'll be interesting to see if anyone good is interested in replacing her since no Big Sky school has a bigger difference in men's/women's basketball interest than Weber.

He also spent two seasons in Cheney as an assistant so he knows the Big Sky somewhat.

Mark Campbell Is Already Gone From Sac

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Campbell resigned to become the head coach at TCU. He went 39-23 in two seasons with the Hornets. His entire coaching history has been on the west coast—can he shift his recruiting for Texas?

This was a surprise. The focus had been on the cheapshotters at Moraga-St. Mary's. (OK. I'm reaching with that. That categorization is more accurately applicable to their defunct football team....)

This was not a surprise. I thought he would hold out for a Pac12 spot, but having a program from a power conference roll out the red carpet after what he did at Sac State should surprise no one.

Considering he (and his staff) land quality players from overseas, yes I think he'll be fine at TCU.

The surprise wasn't so much that he left, it was where he went. All the indicators were that he would go to Moraga-St. Mary's....
