Murray State moving to the MVC

They went from losing no one to all but 2 scholarship players are gone after their coach went to LSU.

Murray puts two more in the portal today

I honestly don’t know that they have a scholarship player committed to come back next year as of now

Ouch. I’m guessing they won’t be back next year.

1217 players in the portal as of the time of this post.

Let's do some rough math:

358 teams x 13 scholarship players per team = 4654
Let's divide that total into 4 equal classes = 1163/class
Let's say 1163 have exhausted their eligibility leaving 3491 players returning.
1217/3491 = 35% of eligible players are transferring.

How many are grad transfers? How many leave a program because of a coaching change? Just curious as to what the baseline level would be due to basic reasons vs players just hopping around for more selfish reasons.

You’ll break the anti portal argument if you start looking at those things.

No way to tell easily. There are several teams affected by coaching changes where 5 or more players are in the portal.

My questions were hypothetical, not really aimed at anyone on this thread. The data behind the actual transfer numbers would be interesting to see. Personally I like the portal for multiple reasons and hope it stays forever. However I wouldn't be opposed to rules aimed at mitigating players just jumping around without a valid reason.

My stance is no questions asked if a player leaves as a grad transfer or due to a coaching change or medical/family reasons. I'm fine with making a player sit a year (or go JC a year) if they are just looking for more playing time elsewhere or just want to ball up with their HS/AAU friends at another program. I don't think it's a good thing for the sport to be able to recruit players currently on another D1 roster. :twocents:

I'm good with a grad transfer if the player's intended degree program isn't available at the school they played for. Some of the other reasons SD mentioned are good, too. But shifting just for "street cred" with the draft? I don't like that at all....

I would hope that a player going the JC route as SD mentioned is aware of the 4-2-4 rule, if it's even still a thing (it may not be). Some guys might get screwed on that if they're not careful.

AJ Green declares for NBA Draft, enters portal
“After talking with friends and family I have decided to enter the NBA Draft with full intent to pursue my childhood dreams of playing professionally,” read Green’s statement. “I will also be entering the transfer portal. This will allow me to gather as much information as I can in order to make the best decision for my future. Returning to UNI will remain an option for me as well.
