Grand Canyon has fired Phoenix Suns superstar Dan Majerle after seven seasons, just hours after the WAC/NCAAT were bogusly cancelled for no legitimate reason. Majerle took GCU through their D-I transition, winning 20+ games in each of their first two seasons, but finished 13-17 this year. Big issues were a vaunted TCU transfer being declared ineligible and another player having grade problems.

Firing a guy who's +47 over seven years is stupid, IMO. This is the kind of thinking that keeps one losing for a long time, a la the Raiders....

A brief internet skim showed me that there were rumors about Rick Pitino going there, but he just got hired at Iona.

GCU is all in on men's basketball. It is their marquee sport given the school has no football. Administration has grand visions of playing with the big boys of collegiate hoops. Majerle got the program started but the school administration and fanbase wants more.

That being said, the GCU student section is the best in the state. U of A, ASU and NAU aren't even close.

Majerle was not a good coach.

GCU's record was inflated by buying a lot of wins versus HBCU's, Chicago State and D-2's

Of Majerle's 136 wins, 48 came from those categories. Of his 89 losses, only 3 came from those categories

Against the rest of DI, he was 88-86

I haven't been to a game @ GCU since the shenanigans experienced in the crowd (from the cranky GCU fans sitting nearby to security playing the role of "Big Brother") during the CIT opening round game.

I thought NAU was supposed to have an ongoing series with GCU starting back in 2013? They played one close game in Flagstaff. They played the next year in the CIT tourney and then nothing. Bad blood between Murphy and Majerle over the transfer by point guard, Russell?

I almost got kicked out at halftime at that game - GCU crowd didn't like my vocal cheering.

And yes, Majerle's underhanded recruitment of Russell is the reason I am happy Majerle never won anything there.

I read on the UOP page that GCU has a history of this. One losing season, and you're gone. It's happened before, apparently.

And the UOP fan reaction to the Drew hiring is blah at best, particularly considering the speculation that UOP head coach Damon Stoudamire was in the works for the GCU job. Apparently, Drew didn't do so hot in his last job....
