IA and IAA Basketball???

Posted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 1:02 pm
by Col Hogan
West Virginia HC Bob Huggins says college basketball should follow college football and create two divisions within the top level of basketball...
Huggins says cutting the number of team's in the sport's premier level would force schools to make a decision about their dedication to a basketball program.

"That's what they have to do in football. You have to make a commitment to have a football program," he told the American Chronicle . "It's attendance and facilities and so forth. If we did that, instead of having 347 teams, we'd maybe have 110 or 150. It makes it so much more manageable, but you could still play those people like football does, but they just can't be in your tournament."

So, I wonder, could you continue to have a IA basketball team and a IAA football team if basketball did make such a split...because if you had to have both on the same level, I could see a number of IAA/FCS football teams disappearing...

Just my thoughts...

Discuss...

Early money goes to Butler, UNI, Nova, and probably Richmond as the Final Four teams

Early money goes on Nova going I-A in football and Richmond & Butler dropping football altogether to go 1-A in basketball.

Agreed...but I was thinking if the FCS stayed as was.

If that was the case who would be the final four? UNI....?

There would be a distinct possibility UNI would follow Nova along the same lines. Their (UNI's) basketball team is MUCH more successful than their football program. :coffee:

And if push came to shove...you might put UMass in that second group...

Going by rankings, and excluding teams that would go 1A it looks like this would be the final four, in order of seed

Northern Iowa
Richmond
Cornell - Ivies go 1A?
Murray State

How do you figure? UNI's record in the NCAA is 1-5...last win coming in 1990

Stupid idea but given the grip the BCS conferences have on the nut sack of the NCAA, I don't think this is out of the realm of possibility.

You'd lose a lot of FCS football programs though to pay for the increased "commitment" Hudgins is referring to (e.g. facilities, etc..).

Out of the Valley teams (MVFC) I could see the following schools dropping football

Indiana State
Illinois State
Western Illinois

With Southern Illinois and UNI as an outside shot.

This, if it did happen, would kill FCS football.

If this were to happen, it would kill all the excitement surrounding the NCAA basketball tournament.

I'm talking about recent success in the MVC. Rankings, and the like.

This line of thinking is exactly why the MVC needs to quit buying into the mid-major label.

With the success the BCS has had at hoarding $$$ for big name football programs, was really only a matter of time before it happens in basketball as well.

The writing was on the wall the first time we looked at one of those stupid ass mid-major rankings and said, well, lookee there that's cool.

Mid-major is a derogatory term and must be resisted at all costs.

I hope Bob Huggins realizes BCS teams like WVU are huge reasons why smaller programs can't put as much of a committment into their basketball programs. When you're travellin' on the road 70% of the time to take a paycheck and lose, and the rest of your OOC games are to no-name teams like yourself, it's hard to generate excitement among your fans, which in-turn creates little revenue for the program. And often, the OOC results set up the tone for the rest of the year among your players and fans. If bigger teams would just have the balls to freakin' travel to mid/low mid-major arenas, then maybe smaller schools would have way more community excitement and actually fill-up their arenas and create nice profits because of it...allowing them to commit better and nicer things to the programs. Not everyone is a die-hard fan, and profits rely on the casual fan as much as it does on die-hards, so getting bigger name opponents like WVU to come to town would be a HUGE deal.

F Bob Huggins.

This. UNI is better than Iowa and Iowa State. However, our biggest crowds are when one of them come to town.

The purpose of this is crystal clear. Keep the balance of power($$) the way it is, make sure the haves remain the haves, the have nots remain in their place, and the gap gets as wide(safe) as possible.

It has worked in football with the BCS, and would serve the same purpose in basketball.

Now that the NCAA owns the NIT, the mechanism is in place. BCS conferences go to the NCAA tourney, everybody else goes to the NIT. Simple, clean, easy.

It would be the CBS National Championship Tournament and the NCAA Tournament would go to ESPN.

The real question I have after reading the article is WTF is the NCAA doing with the $300 million plus a year in profit they're taking in?

Its one way to screw teams like Weber State who's football hasnt had the most storied program, but thier Mens Division 1 Basketball team has a great storied program famous for first round upsets over Michigan State and North Carolina, punishing Weber State's basketball team just because they are small and have a 1-AA football team is RIDICULOUS.

THis will take all the excitment away from the conf tourneys and the NCAA tournament, and its just plain stupid

except the BCS conferences will make more money. So to them its actually smart.

This, if it happens, is the first step in what I think will eventually happen 20 years from now - the BCS conferences will leave the NCAA and form their own exclusive league with regulations somewhere between the NCAA and the professional leagues.

Dane, I been screaming this message as loud as I could ever since the day I first heard the term mid-major used. You have to be a complete IDIOT to not have seen this coming, it was so obvious.

I'm not sure that the BCS or Big-6 or whatever you want to call them really need the NCAA any more. In fact, they could probably make more money without having to answer to the NCAA.

We're getting ready to upgrade the stadium to about 30K. AD, university president, board of trustees, and board of regents all on the same page. We will be moving "up" to FBS in the not so distant future, CUSA is the stated target.
