Cal Poly to the WAC?

Well so far this is hardly the year to be even thinking about this but I heard that Cal Poly may be joining the WAC in 2012-13? Can anybody confirm this?

Welcome!!

I have not heard anything of that nature. Cal Poly doesn't even come close to meeting the minimum requirements for attendance to make the move to FBS, so unless the WAC as a whole is moving down, I can't see that happening.

The only thing I've ever seen in a somewhat official capacity is the Fresno State Coach's comments on scheduling Cal Poly. He said he wanted to schedule Cal Poly because he believes they will be in the WAC soon.

Hey thanks and thanks for the reply...they need to average 15k in per game right? They are expanding the stadium to 22k. That is supposed to be completed in 2010. Most of the games are at or near sell outs now and Spanos currently holds 11k. A friend told me about it and after I saw that the stadium was being expanded I started to believe it.

Yes, they need to average 15,000, but even that rule isn't really enforced. Its easy to get your official attendance numbers up from 11,000 to 15,000 without really increasing attendance. Take a look at the MAC attendance. Some of those guys have never really had the 15,000 limit handled well.

The years you cite are interesting, because 2012 is the first year they will be allowed to move if they wanted. There is currently a moratorium on jumping moving up to FBS from FCS which is set to be lifted in 2012.

There is also some talk about adding a $1 million application fee to be allowed to jump to FBS football. The major conferences want all the money for themselves. They will try everything in their power to keep people out.

I can see the big guys, in exchange for agreeing to not extend the moratorium, puts some hurdles up to future moves - application fee, stricter attendance requirements, etc.

They realize they need a certain number of FBS teams out there, for scheduling, etc. They just don't want too many, or weak ones.

It seems that if this were to happen it would almost have to be a package deal with CP and UC-D both going to the WAC. Then maybe SUU could get an invite to the Big Sky and every school in the West would have a stable conference home.

Don't worry about the attendance requirement, Idaho hasn't met it since they made the jump.

How stable do you think the BSC will be over the next 5 years? And why would they need SUU - just because SUU needs a home...

They’ll defiantly need that 22k seat stadium in order to provide enough seats for the whooping 6,900 people that show up to their playoff games.

I cant really explain that number? The games I have seen have been sold out or near sold out +/- 10k. Maybe because it was over Thanksgiving weekend and fewer student attended?

That is the explanation right there. EVERY team is low the first week of the playoffs around the country. You lose about 25% of the normal attendance so you guys are the same as everyone else. The Griz normally have less than 20K for the 1st round game so we lose a shitload as well.

Even though the topics of SUU, Poly, and UCD and conference realignment is talked about constantly, I figured I'd throw my 2 cents on the whole deal. Even though a lot of criticism will probably come from Big Sky fans who do not want their conference changed, I would like to see SUU join the Sky as an all-sports member bringing the full conference membership to 10. With that said (even though I doubt it will ever happen b/c I have read the commissioner does not want football only members), Poly and UC-Davis should be invited as football-only members bringing the total number of football schools to 12 giving us 2 divisions. Both of those schools could stay in the Big West for their other sports. In addition to this, for all sports other than football, bring in any two of Denver, Utah Valley Univ., or Seattle Univ. This ultimately would give the Big Sky 12 members at all times. Poly and Davis would be members 11 and 12 for football and any of the above-mentioned would be 11 and 12 for all other sports. Just something to consider and I wish it would happen but the likelihood is slim to none.

Looking forward to seeing the Birds pull off the upset in Cedar this Saturday. It's been snowing from what i hear.

I thought Cal Poly recently spent $21 million to expand the stadium to 11,000 seats.

Cal Poly has averaged 9990 in four games this year. Largest crowd (Sacramento State game) had 10,381, so they haven't sold out this year yet (assuming 11,000 seats available).

2008: averaged 9574 in 7 games
2007: averaged 9644 in 5 games
2006: averaged 7874 in 5 games
2005: averaged 6959 in 6 games
2004: averaged 8395 in 5 games
2003: averaged 6700 in 6 games
2002: averaged 5952 in 5 games
2001: averaged 7158 in 5 games

I think Pat Hill might have been justifying to his local media playing I-FCS teams.

You have a good point there, maybe hes just saying that for justification. However, imo, Cal Poly would make a great Wac team. Location, school prestige, great stadium site, community support, good recruiting pipeline. Maybe 2012/2013 we might see this.

As far as SUU in the Sky... I really dont want to see another NCU type team in the Sky, heres a good rule of thumb... If you cant beat Montana at least half the time, an extra spot shouldnt be added for that team. (we have enough teams losing to them on an annual basis as it is. However, If SUU upgraded that horrible stadium, added field turf, & added a nice pressbox... then I wouldnt mind as much. Otherwise, whats the point? :coffee:

I wish we could stop this cr@p right now. SUU will NEVER be in the Sky.

So Cow Poly's getting a 22K stadium. Big whoop. Liberty's getting a 30K stadium, they already have a big-time ski center, and major improvements to the rest of the athletic facilities are on the way. Cow Poly has always been a backwater in terms of CA athletics (not to the level of Northridge or Riverside, which are true ratholes), and probably always will be.

Im not sure what you are talking about, Riverside is actually Ok... & Cal Poly's campus is TOP NOTCH. I dont think you know what you are talking about AT ALL. Sacramento State is a pretty bad looking campus in an even worse area. When we were in the hotel we couldnt sleep bc of idiots doing donuts in the parkinglot next door.

Yup, the only team that gets an auto-auto bid before the season starts.

Wasn't saying anything about Sac's facilities, which really are cr@ap. Most Big West fans consider Riverside to be a dump, along with Northridge and Santa Barbara. The last time I was at Cow Poly, their field wasn't much better than Northridge's, which sucked even before they gave up the ghost. Not the worst in Cali, mind you, but not the best, either. My point was that 22K is nothing to celebrate when a school like Liberty is going to 30K.
