If you are considering Colgate as a top 25 team there is no reason that Central shouldn't be in the mix as well.

Albany would have been too if UMass had won this weekend, but UMass's ass kicking looks bad for Albany even though the Maine win is getting better.

Believe me, I agree - no strong wins. the Columbia win is arguably the strongest, but not great.

However, Colgate somehow has "earned" a top 25 vote? But Central hasn't?

Perhaps, but ballots that either include both Colgate and Central, or those that don't include either would both be valid as the logic is consistent.

What if a pollster has weighed everything objectively in their mind and these two fall #25 and #26 (not far fetched at all). Who makes it in?

Made the playoffs last year, returned pretty much every key player from that team, and started this year 6-0. Is that enough?

sorry, but no, its not enough.

Made the playoffs last year: only because of the AQ. They would have never gotten an at-large. And since when is what a team did last year relevant for their poll position this year?

Returned every key player: They lost almost their entire offensive line from last year, including 3 all-Patriot players.

Started 6-0: Zero quality wins. And OT to beat a horrendous Princeton team.

Despite a so-so schedule an undefeated record must be taken into account in some manner. TCU is ranked 10 or so and also play in a lower level conference and really have no quality wins.

There are more than just those two teams jockeying for position at the bottom of the heap. There are at least a dozen more, with not much to separate one from another.

I give Central Connecticut credit for scheduling a potential top 10 team, but do not consider a nineteen point loss to be "respectable." William & Mary completely dominated the game, scoring on 5 of their first six possessions, sacking the CCSU quarterback three times, and gaining 372 yards to CCSU's 237.

Yeah, & that's pretty much all they lost. They returned Greg Sullivan, one of the best dual-threat QBs in FCS. They returned Nate Eachus, a very capable running back who (along w/ Jordan McCord) has allowed Colgate to not really miss Jordan Scott at all. They also returned preseason All-American WR Pat Simonds, who is putting up similar numbers to last year. Despite the losses on the line, the offense is averaging slightly more offense per game & they lead the nation in rushing yardage. In addition, the defense is giving up about 90 fewer ypg than last year.

First of all, the "made playoffs last year" wasn't meant to be separate from the "returned most every key player". If a playoff team returns most everything, expecting them to make the playoffs again is pretty reasonable. My preseason evaluation had them as a borderline-playoff caliber team & nothing has happened to really change that feeling.

As for last year, you don't know that Colgate wouldn't have got an at-large. My analysis had them as about equivalent to the bubble teams (Maine, W&M, Liberty, etc.). Even if they weren't at-large worthy, they were certainly worthy of a top-25 ranking last year.

That's a silly bit of evidence to use for putting CCSU ahead of Colgate. Yes, Colgate struggled to beat a bad Princeton team, but CCSU only beat an equally bad Lehigh team—who lost to Princeton—by 7.


CCSU did play a good W&M team, but they got hammered (as Native pointed out). Playing a good team doesn't do much good if you get hammered. The Columbia victory is CCSU's only win over a team that isn't completely terrible (RMU is 0-6, Sacred Heart is 1-4 w/ a win over horrid SFPA, and Lehigh is 1-4 w/ a win over dreadful Georgetown). Colgate's wins over Monmouth, Stony Brook, Fordham, & Cornell, though not particularly impressive, are all still better than every one of CCSU's wins except maybe Columbia.

The answer to the question is: NOPE.
