Cleveland State to add FCS Football?

Per the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
http://www.cleveland.com/sports/csu/ind ... ts_op.html

If CSU fielded a team, it would be as a nonscholarship program in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly known as I-AA. The Vikings would seek to join the 10-member Pioneer Football League, competing against such schools as Butler, Dayton, Davidson and Drake.

The football committee, composed mainly of CSU trustees and administrators, estimated that brand of football would cost about $1 million a year to operate, counting coaching salaries and support staff.
In addition, uniforms, equipment and outfitting weight and training rooms would cost about $517,000.
Where would the team play?

The average Pioneer League football stadium seats 7,275. The average game attendance is 2,200.
The committee determined that a stadium with 3,000 seats would work at CSU, and that Krenzler Field, where the CSU men and women's soccer teams play, could be renovated for both football and soccer

I think UVU should seriously consider taking this route as well. Previous discussions about adding football centered around the cost (and around not interfering with the transition to full Division I membership and university status, both now attained). But, non-scholarship football would cost about half as much as scholarship football, especially because women's sports would have to be added to ensure continued progress.

That would give another cupcake for the Big Sky and Great West to beat up on as well.

Ideally, this could be a good way to bring football to a campus. UVU students have repeated indicated that they want football. The administration continues to say that it is too expensive. So, why not do it for half the cost and have a program that might in the future be expanded if support continues.

Of course, the two nearest conference teams would be San Diego and Drake. It would mean a lot of long road trips. But, I think for the students it would be better than not having football and it would be less a threat to Weber State and Southern Utah, because of the scholarships they offer.

As for Cleveland State, perhaps many of the same issues are there--except for the long travel.

i don't see what this does for Cleveland St... other than setting the conditions for them to eventually make it a schollie squad... but seriously, Ohio is SATURATED with college teams... don't see where adding another team to that mix makes any sense at all.

OTOH... UVU should do exactly this...

Other than build school pride, involvement, etc in a commuter campus.

not to be anti-football, (since i'm all about more teams) but that money pumped in to a few dorms and a better student union would probably do more for that... just a thought...

dunno how a non-schollie team in a state so thoroughly dominated by the Buckeyes, and with 9 other D-I football teams derives the benefit you mention - when most of the state goes to Columbus, and the 9 other programs struggle to draw (except Cincy right now) and are already forced to schedule around the Senator and his boys...

Settle down kids. Pioneer teams schedule D.II and D.III OOC games.

I would like to see UVU add scholarship football and join the Great West so we can get an autobid. Non-schollie and joining Pioneer would be good too though. More DI football in the west would be a good thing.

The Old Dominion model used this approach. In the last 6 or 7 years, we built 6 new dorms and a village of on-campus apartments. All of which were filled before the first snap.

Same ol' pitty me AZ argument :crybaby: ... I don't see a reason why there would be more colleges in the eastern portions of America.

East Coast: More population, more colleges, more football teams available to play. Don't bitch and moan about not being able to play "cupcakes" or FBS opponents because your school is in the middle of nowhere America. It's not our fault you can't/don't want to schedule these schools because you're geographically landlocked so to say. Yup, I know you make more money at home blah blah blah etc etc etc.

I agree with what's already been said about Cleveland State and Ohio. There are just too many teams. The MAC, particularly the MAC East, is dreadful because of the lack of concentration of talent. Kent State, Bowling Green, Ohio, Akron, and Miami OH dilute the talent pool for any one MAC team to really rise to the status of our glory years.
