4 UMass football players arrested on drug charges in Amherst
Four members of the University of Massachusetts football team were arrested on drug charges in downtown Amherst just before midnight Thursday, police said.

The four UMass students, identified as James Carven, of Hanover; Robert McLaughlin, of Brewster; Michael Mele, of Sea Girt, N.J., and Shane Viveiros, of Fall River, were each charged with possession of a class B substance, according to Amherst police.

The UMass Athletic Department announced Friday afternoon that all four players have been suspended from the team for violation of athletic department and team rules.

The athletic department declined any further comment. The statement did not indicate if the suspensions are temporary or permanent.

Mele and Viveiros were also charged for being in possession of false identifications. All pleaded innocent to charges Friday in court, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette, and were released.

The four were arrested behind a building at 11 East Pleasant St. after an officer on bicycle patrol observed them acting suspiciously and stopped to investigate.

Police would not say what the drugs were pending confirmation of lab tests. Under state law, class B substances include cocaine, crack cocaine, LSD, OxyContin, ecstasy, methamphetamine, and methadone.

McLaughlin is the son of Joe McLaughlin, who played for the 1978 UMass football team that reached the Division I-AA national title game and went on to play linebacker for the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants from 1979-84.

Mele is a 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker who transferred to the Minutemen from Syracuse. He was third on the Orange in total tackles with 72.

Wow, didn't know it was coke. Couple of fake IDs and a joint is one thing, but the coke sort of makes it a pretty bad deal.

Nothing...Coach Morris and the AD refuse to comment or discuss the four and their situation...and a spokesman for the University says it's a legal situation that they won't get involved with....exactly what they should be saying...

I will speculate we won't see them back anytime soon (unless charges are dropped)... :shake:

Man, these young men need to think about what they are doing. Most college kids get fake ID's but coke...yikes

Coke was pretty prevalent when I played.

Doesn't make it right. But its probably more common than most people think.

Not to defend them one iota...but that's the problem with some young people (as I remember being young)...they don't think sometimes...

Especially McLaughlin...his dad, who played UMass football and in the NFL, is being entered into the UMass Athletic Hall Of Fame this Friday....nice present to his dad...

Coach Morris made his first statement of substance about the four players arrested on Friday...

As the team prepares for Dealware this weekend, he was asked if the four would travel with the team...
Suspended Minutemen James Carven, Bob McLaughlin, Michael Mele and Shane Viveiros, who were arrested on drug charges last week, are not expected to make the trip.

“You can assume that ... you can’t believe everything you read, but it’s a situation we are dealing with internally,” Morris said.

The four players have pleaded innocent. From a playing standpoint, the most significant among them was Viveiros, a starting defensive back.
Interesting comment "You can't believe everything you read"...

So has Mele not been playing? I think he was going to be Jennings' replacement in the middle?

And the quote is interesting. Its also fits with the line the University has been taking, which is that they haven't rushed to judgment. Keep us updated Colonel. Hopefully these kids just found themselves in a misunderstanding?

Josh Jennings has not played a minute this year, and may not...he's had some serious back issues that are keeping him out of practice...

He is the most serious loss the Minutemen have suffered this year...more than any of the four involved in this incident...and Mele, who was suppose to fill the hole created by the loss of Jennings, has not played a down due to injuries...maybe that's why the "Cuse cast him off... :coffee:
