...After their arrests on drug charges...
James Carven, Bob McLaughlin, Mike Mele and Shane Viveiros - were suspended by the school's athletic department Friday following their arrests late Thursday night in Amherst.
A statement issued by UMass reported that the suspensions were for violating team and athletic department rules.
All four players were arrested Thursday night and pleaded innocent on Friday to a charge of possessing a Class B substance (cocaine). Mele and Viveiros also pleaded innocent to a charge of using fake identification.

And they are back...
After being suspended for two weeks, and missing the Delaware game, the four players suspended after being arrested on drug charges have been reinstated to the team...
Athletic Director John McCutcheon said the reinstatement is in keeping with university drug and alcohol policies that apply to all athletes.
Athletes can be suspended for 10 percent of their season for these violations.
Coach Morriss still has not said anything about if any of the four will play this week against New Hampshire...one of the four was a starter...

So the charges were bogus??? The coach is letting them play while charges are pending??? Doesn't seem right.

1. This is hear-say so take it for what it's worth...I've been told the drug charges against two of the players are bogus...problem is, it may be two who are also charged with possessing fake ID's (drug charges are not tied to fake IDs, just in addition)
2. Coach Morris has not said they are playing...his only comment is that they are "integrating themselves back onto the team"...and according to the AD,....well, here's what he has to say...
Athletic director John McCutcheon said the length of the suspensions are in accordance with athletic department policy.
"All of the players involved still have legal issues pending, but per our policy they've fulfilled the 10 percent suspension of the season," McCutcheon said.
"That doesn't preclude any additional penalties they may have to deal with down the road," he added. "But as it stands right now, they've fulfilled their obligations to our department policy, pending any additional action through the courts or the university judicial system."
The way I read that...they could be suspended again, depending on what happens in the courts...
3. My opinion: They should not play...period...it's not good for the University to allow student-athletes to play while under a legal cloud...I don't care what type of charges they are facing...
Let them practice...OK..because they could be cleared...Innocent until proven guilty...
Let them keep their scholarships...for the same reason...
But play...NO...

Happy to report that none of the four were suited up today...coaches decision...
Congrats on making the right decision, Coach Morris...

And then get the win against UNH - great karma!
Kinda like in '06 when George Mason (my MBA school) suspended their starting point guard for their 1st round March Madness game against Michigan State after he punched a guy in the nutz...

Man, if this happened in Missoula the student paper would be rolling your team through the mud over this and your team would be labeled as criminals and thugs.

This is the first real incident involving the football team in some time...we had one idiot who transfered from an FBS team that got in trouble before pre-season...but we've really been lucky...
If there is another incident like this...I know the Daily Collegian (student paper) will be all over it...
I'm willing to bet the student paper didn't start with the first incident...

Update on this story...
All four have had their charges continued, and the charges will be dropped if there is not further legal issues by March...
All four appeared before Eastern Hampshire District Court Judge John Payne. Through an agreement among defense lawyers and the Northwestern District Attorney's office, the four were given pre-trial probation, meaning they did not admit guilt to any of the charges against them.
