Montana/Weber State......Rivalry?

Yeah Montana basicly owns the series in football between these 2 schools, and with Weber owning the series in basketball, both sides of the coin are pretty lopsided.
But even with both sports being pretty lopsided, is this a rivalry in the making?
Alot of Wildcat fans dont like Montana, and alot of Montana fans dont like Weber, both teams coaches apparently dislike each other, most of both team fans are looking forward to one certain game this year, Halloween.
Montana as a school usually draws the biggest crowds at Weber games both football (except when its raining like mad dogs) and basketball. Weber and Montana are 2 of the 6 founding schools of the Big Sky conf, they have been playing each other ever since, and there usually seems to be a little bad blood between the 2 schools (especially last season).
What does everyone else think? Is the game between the Fizz and the Weebs turning into a rivalry?

Not really in the sense of a rivalry in the way I think of it. We have rivalries in the short term with all the teams that bubble to the top for a short periods of time. If I had to rank them outside of the only real rival we have which is MT State then it would something more like EWU, NAU, and then Weber. Weber's only been there since last year. The last time Weber was a real challenging team was when they had the tremendous athletic talent of Scott Shields. They are a great team right now but not really a rivalry as far as I can see.

Its actually hilarious to hear there is someone that doesn't like Coach Mac. What does that say about the person not liking him when that is so rare to hear...if even true. I don't believe it.
Anyone who meets Mac loves him. He's a very personable, friendly, funny guy. And he's old! How many 70 yr old's can you hate, seriously?
WSU vs UM:
WSU 12 wins
UM 36 wins
2008: they split 1-1, each winning at home.
Since 1998 WSU is 2-10 vs the Griz.
Since '98 WSU has had only 2 seasons with more than 6 wins and 6 seasons with a losing record.
The last time WSU beat UM in back-to-back seasons was in 1984 and 1985, this I believe was also the last time WSU beat UM in Missoula but it may have been an older stadium. If that is true then WSU has never won at Wa-Griz. Wa-Griz opened in 1986.
Is this true? Anyone know?

I don't really care for the kind of "hate" this or "hate" that rivary. I "hate" the assholes that flew into the twin towers, or that stole UN food in Somalia, or that throw acid on schoolgirls' faces. I hate the actions of criminals and maybe some of the criminals themselves.
I do not hate next week's opposing team.*
I care more about good clean football. I also admire and respect the kind of football program that Montana has built over the years and that Mac is trying to build at Weber.
Anyway, we are "bubbling to the top" now, and have every reason to expect a great game in Missoula this year and again in Ogden next year.
*Doesn't mean I don't want to kick Montana's asses in WA GRIZ on Halloween!

WTF are you talking about? I never said a thing about Mac.
Now if you take your own #'s and break them down as if they were seasons. You would have (4) 3-9 seasons against the Griz and the 2-10 season against the Griz since 1998. If that's what you want to consider "good" then feel free my friend.

I guess if you really wanna say the charter members of the Big Sky are rivals then that would be UM, MSU, WSU and Idaho State.
They've all been playing each other every year since 1963. NAU joined in 1970, EWU, Sac, PSU all joined in the late 90's and UNC in 2006.
In basketball it kind of changes depending on who's good and for how long. Right now WSU fans are looking forward to the PSU basketball game than any other but they have only been good as recent as 2005. Usually the charter members are some of the games to look forward to.
NAU has become good games recently, baldy has done a great job with that program.
But in football from a WSU fans point of view, our rival has only beat us 2 times in 25 yrs and we rarely beat the Montanas everybody else we can beat or are 50-50 with historically.
WSU vs Big Sky
School Win Loss Pct
EWU 13 14 48%
ISU 35 14 72%
UM 12 36 26%
MSU 20 25 44%
NAU 23 22 51%
UNC 3 0 100%
PSU 17 12 59%
Sac 9 4 69%

You've "heard" that? Maybe it's true and maybe it's not. What does that matter anyway though? Let's assume they don't like each other. I guess until I knew why I couldn't make a judgement if the dislike was valid. Mac may be a great guy in your program and your community. That being said he and Bobby may have had dealings personally at meetings that we are not privy to. Both coaches are strategically and tactically oriented by virtue of their jobs so it would seem to be a real bad move to just manufacture a "hate" for each other because the likelihood that both teams will make the playoffs, have a common opponent, and one of the guys need a little info. from the other one would be really hurtful to that cause.
It wouldn't make a lot of sense to just dislike a guy for no reason. Either they don't dislike each other or some fans are trying to manufacture some drama that isn't really there.

Maybe BH and RM dislike each other because of the Balough and Bender incidents......

It would show that Ogden's community is embracing WSU as a place to be to see a good football game. You can easily tell if a program is gonna make a step in the right direction when they start to have their largest crowds for games that are really big games and not just the convenient ones like homecoming. If you have a big game in town and it's not on a traditional big crowd weekend like that and you have a shitload of people showing up then it's time to start believin'. In the past however most Weber fans are not as in to it as you guys on this board are.

Tell me about it, I wonder how those so-called Weber fans felt after staying at home to watch BYU get man-handled by Florida State, instead of going to watch Weber beat the Bengals.
Still had over 8,000 at the ISU game, and this weekend BYU hosts Utah State on Friday, and Utah has a bye, Weber SHOULD get a good crowd at the Game vs the Bobcats.

If it's true that offense fills stadiums, Coach Mac is doing a heckuva a great job which ought to be rewarded with attendance.
Cross-town competition from both BYU and Utah constrain our attendance potential, but we could still make good progess this year and next.
Now what was it they say about defense? We might have to work on that one a little bit if we want to go very deep in the playoffs - or even get to the playoffs.

Back in the early days of making the playoffs I thought that we couldn't be beat with the offense that we had. Turns out that we could be and we were because we lacked a defense that could stop the run and if we couldn't stop the run we didn't get the ball in the offenses hands nearly enough to make up for that fact. Once we had a defense that could keep us in games at a national level then things started to change.

Here is part of my post at EGRIZ regarding Weber State and Montana. As much I hate them when we play them I respect what they are doing there.
With that said, what sucks most is Montana, has outgrown this conference as for fan support, and competition in football, and womens basketball. We are not too far from it in Mens Basketball either.
It appears to me with a few more good football seasons under their belt, it would not surprise me one bit to put Weber State in Montana's class too. They already have the best Mens basketball program and coach in the Big Sky conference. If they can overcome the losses of Smith and Higgins the next 2 years in football, I think that will be a sign they too have arrived and remain with Montana as conference kingpins.
I cannot speak for everyone, but the impartial side of me is very impressed what Weber State is doing within this conference. It is too bad they cannot get better fan support for their programs.

Its a shame, its sad really for the players and coaches, the work they are doing on the field and the lack of support is unacceptable. No reason to have less than 15k a game.
If we can get 8000 to a bball game no reason we shouldnt' be able to double that for football.
