It didn't take Richmond long to reclaim the top spot in The Sports Network FCS Top-25 poll. The Spiders, the defending national champions, used a 24-16 victory over Duke to springboard back on top.

Appalachian State had a big comeback at East Carolina fall short, 29-24, and dropped from No. 1 to No. 2. The Mountaineers have been ranked at the top of the preseason poll in four consecutive seasons.

Richmond received 103 out of 122 first-place votes and easily outdistanced ASU with 3,042 points to 2,740. Appalachian State had 10 first-place votes, while Villanova, Northern Iowa and William & Mary received three first-place ballots each and South Carolina State picked up one.

I hate to steal a post from someone, but aceinthehole over at AGS posted this and I could not have said it better myself.
Too much emphsis on preseason rankings and name recognition.

Holy Cross is #25 for beating Georgetown.
Georgia Southern gets 212 votes for holding off Albany.
Colgate beats Monmouth and gets 123 votes.
URI gets 37 votes for beating Fordham.
VMI gets 6 votes for a 1-pt win at Robert Morris

yet, CCSU beats Lehigh and gets 2 votes.

I hope wins vs. Monmouth, Albany and RMU are worth that much during NEC play. This is why this year's "earned access" requirement of a #16 ranking is utter BS for NEC teams.

This was my argument against preseason polls. The only reason they are created is to create traffic and discussion in otherwise uneventful off season time. The harm is that they create what is then considered a true ranking and people base all votes off of them.

This was the case with McNeese St last season. I believe they were ranked in the top 5 last year and had a very average season. Yet because of name recognition and the early high ranking the Pokes never fell out of the poll and it wasn't until the last week or so that they fell out of the top 20. This hurts other teams from being properly ranked.

How could anyone in their right mind vote SCSU #1?
