The Cyclones are debuting more than new coach Paul Rhoads; it’s the first game for what is expected to be a high-powered, explosive spread offense. Passes will be hurled throughout the field in an attempt to create one-on-one matchups with the defense.

When North Dakota State Has the Ball
The Bisons are considerably more traditional than Iowa State, striving for balance in the rushing and passing game. Pat Paschall is the top returning rusher, with 601 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Key Matchup: Nate Frere vs. Nick Mertens
The key to a successful Iowa State season rests with a defense that allowed around 38 points a game last season. Critical to that improvement is a better pass rush. The Cyclones sacked quarterbacks just 19 times last season. “That’s unacceptable,” nose guard Nate Frere said during media day. “We’ve got to do a better job getting to the quarterback.” Tonight, that’s Nick Mertens, who struggled last season, and had to beat out Dante Perez for the start.

if not for two plays (the fumble in the endzone in the first quarter and that disaster of a pick thrown by Mertens) this game would have been damn close... that said, a loss is a loss, but it wasn't a whuppin by any means...

That could spell some real trouble later in the season. ISU isn't that fast, and they made NDSU look extremely slow.

That is the main thing I noticed about NDSU when they played us in the dome last year. They had much less team speed than UNI, and simply couldn't keep up. A lotta power, but no speed.

We were at the game and a few thoughts.... 1. ISU fans were great (a big suprise to me). 2. ISU is better on offense than I had expected. 3. If the Bison stick to running the ball and controlling the clock, they will be in every game this year, if they start trying to get the passing game going (3rd quarter ) they will allow teams to extend leads. 3. With the talent graduated last year, this years team is better than I had expected.

Big 12 > Big Ten

Yes, the Big 12 as a whole is a stronger conference than the Big Ten.
But Iowa State isn't exactly a conference powerhouse.
(three conference wins total over the past 3 seasons)

ISU fans are great, but a lot of that is they don't have a lot of success to get all high an mighty about. They just love football and the atmosphere.
