FBS Teams That Need To Beware The FCS In 2009

While Appalachian State beating Michigan in 2007 was by no means the first time an FCS team beat an FBS team, it sure opened a lot of eyes. In fact over the years it is a fairly common occurrence to see an FCS team beat an FBS team.

I can name at least one FBS team losing to an FCS every year for the last 10 years, and I could pull them from every conference, so this isn’t just something that affects the non-automatic qualifiers.

In 2008, New Hampshire beat Army 10-28.

The aforementioned Appalachian State over Michigan in 2007.

Montana State topped Colorado 19-10 in 2006. Portland Sate got UNLV 17-6 this year as well.

Stanford lost to UC Davis in 2005.

Mississippi State dropped one to Maine 7-9 in 2004.

It was a big year for the FCS as Stephen F. Austin defeated Louisiana Monroe, 23-21. Delaware was able to beat Navy, 21-17, and Cal Poly also beat UTEP, 34-13.

Villanova walloped Rutgers to the tune of 37-19 in 2002

Northern Iowa beat Ball State in 2001. The final score was 42-39

Appalachian State had struck in 2000 also knocking out Wake Forest 20-16. Hawaii lost to Portland State 45-20 in 2000 as well.

Wisconsin vs. Wofford
Indiana vs. Eastern Kentucky
Maryland vs. James Madison
Virginia vs. William & Mary
Duke vs. Richmond
Syracuse vs. Maine
Colorado State vs. Weber State
Wyoming vs. Weber State

Man, Montana never makes these kind of lists! Oh if only we could get the respect we so richly deserve.

I'd like to hold out hope for NDSU at Iowa State... and if Minnesota sleeps on SDSU it could be close (but the Gophers are a LOT better than the team the Bison beat in 2007)

I like this Turtle fans point of view about the JMU v Maryland game... I laughed, but he's probably right, JMU never comes out well for these games.
The Pick: Obvious pick. Terps destroy and have little mercy for JMU even in the second half with the “B” squad getting mop up time. JMU is one of the best teams in Division I-AA or some shit, but they are going to get a beat down in this one.

ASU getting no love on a potential win despite the fact that were rolling in with one of the best teams we've fielded. We may not win, but we've got a decent shot - it'll make a W that much sweeter.

I'd give Wofford a good chance against USF (I'll most likely be at that game), I honestly at this point have no idea how Southern will fare against UL-Laugh. I'm hoping they at least bring the playbook.

Agree.....but you gotta know that if any FBS team would take an FCS team seriously, it would have to be an FBS team from North Carolina after getting inundated with AppSt-UM stories and with the historical mediocrity that is FBS football in this state.....ECU will be primed for their opener after a good year last year and to shut up the AppSt fans.....but, AppSt is definitely capable with this team.....would absolutely LOVE it.....

I'll have to take issue with the UVA-W&M game being one of the featured ones to watch. It is going to be a bloodletting. W&M does not match up with UVA; rebuilding or not.

If Maine develops any type of passing game......they definitely have a shot at beating Syracuse.

Richmond vs Duke should be a good one.

No FCS win will ever compare to App St's...wasn't Michigan ranked like 5th? lol

How about Southern Utah taking on Utah State? That should be on the list even though SUU isn't/wont be ranked.

Colorado State vs. Weber State

Colorado State is considered a mid to bottom team in the Mountain West. Their biggest play maker from 2008 becomes the biggest hole to fill in 2009. Running back Gartrell Johnson, No. ten nationally in rushing yards, is gone. Rushing defense will be the weak spot on the other side of the ball. Ranked 102 in the nation last year and replacing six starters out of the front seven doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Weber State finished last season at 10-4 and made a trip to the FCS playoffs. The offense got them there and will likely get them there again. Quarterback Higgins threw for 4460 yards and 36 touchdowns. WR Tim Toone caught 1,525 yards of that with seven touchdowns. Don’t forget receivers Nakamura and Phillips who pulled in a combined 1,425 yards and 16 touchdowns. While the passing game was strong, the running game was right up there too. Trevyn Smith ran for 1,585 yards and 21 touchdowns. Smith also caught 62 passes for 778 yards coming out of the back field.

Wyoming vs. Weber State

Yeah I am calling for Weber to have a possible 2-0 record against the Mountain West. As I just mentioned the offense for Weber is pretty ridiculous. Unfortunately, I cant say the same for the defense. Only five starters are returning so they will be looking to some young guys to step up. But again the offense is just sick.

Wyoming on the other hand is replacing the backfield and is doing so at the same time as having a new coach who will bring in a new offense. With a new look offense things cant get any worse as Wyoming was 108 in total offense last season. The defense will be looking to remain the teams strength and may only have some questions in the middle at linebacker. The line and secondary return well in tact only having to find one new starter at each level.

SIU could surprise Marshall, except that it wouldn't be that big of a surprise.

May I point out that SIU has never lost to Marshall.

If we can be allowed to call two games a streak.

Spot on...I saw Bill & Mary two years ago...not a bad squad, but they tend to fade against quality FCS opponents...I don't see them being successful against UVA...

You could but then we would have to start referring to you as Montana State. They believe that two games is a streak also.

UNI has never lost to Kansas State (3-0: '85, '86, '89).
Not that the Panthers will be playing the Wildcats again any time soon.
(at least not those wildcats. but I'm sure there will be another UNI/UNH playoff matchup, would hate to break that tradition. haha)

Not all of you SAC but there were quite a few in Missoula in 2004 selling Bobcat shirts at the tailgate the said "The Streak Continues".
I asked one of the young fellers what "Streak" the shirt referred to and he said it referred to the last two games over the Griz. I told him that a streak didn't begin until three and he told me that two was a streak.
I laughed very obnoxiously at him and told him that he might want to check the definition of streak before printing shirts up next time.

Those laughs aren't at you but at those selling the shirts that day SAC, it was quite funny and I did hear it from a few Cat fans that aren't as well informed as you.

I know this is old news, but along with the App St over Michigan, NDSU had TWO FBS wins in 2007, on their way to a 10-1, 2nd place finish in the Great West Conference.

Took down Central Michigan handily, and Roehl'ed the UM Gophers in their hole. It was a great year to be cheering the Bison! :thumb:
