From the SI Vault: Rick Reilly's 1992 piece on The Citadel

Before Rick Reilly morphed into Mitch Fucking Albom several years ago, he did terrific features for Sports Illustrated. Some of you may have read this story before, but since it's so very well-written, and also because it will gig the shit out of our Cadet brethren, it's certainly worth reposting. Enjoy.

I bet they still hate his guts over this one, an eternal echo that will never fade:
Citadel cadets have no more connection to the military than do Harvard undergraduates. Only those students who have signed ROTC contracts will be obliged to be sworn into a branch of the service, and an ROTC contract can be signed on most any campus in the country. Even former Citadel president James Stockdale, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner, likened attending The Citadel to playing soldier. Get up close and you can see it. Those splendid cadet uniforms—and the faculty's, too—are of the sort you might get at a good Army surplus store, vague grays and indefinite stripes and tags. The Citadel uniform is the equivalent of a World War II bomber jacket ordered through a catalog.
Hey neat, they've even archived their old Letters. Here's one pertinent posting in the next week's issue:
Pat Conroy wrote:Congratulations on your article about my alma mater. Though it broke my heart, the article was brilliantly written and witheringly accurate. Reilly described the terror of the plebe system as well as it has ever been described. Reilly also corroborated almost every line I wrote in The Lords of Discipline. His article could serve as the Cliffs Notes for that novel.

Though I received a wonderful education at The Citadel, I have never been able to understand fully the pathological fear of women there, the eerie cult of brutality against freshmen, and the consistent lying about what goes on in the barracks. I was also stupefied by the statement of Lieut. Gen. Claudius Watts, who says that "race relations are not a problem at The Citadel."

I welcome SI to a new sport, one you did not know existed. I'm an Olympic-class athlete in this obscure and bruising sport: the fielding of hate mail from Citadel graduates. Because of Reilly's fierce and uncompromising exposé of a college I deeply love, I will have to be content to be this year's silver medalist. I predict that SI will run away with the gold.

....and El Cid is singing a different tune as well......"Hello Dolly"...

So, all it takes for El Cid to be competitive is to have their manhood questioned? Might want to consider upping the women enrollment prior to App game....

Our athletic program did a lot to refute Reilly's article. The article was mainly about the baseball program but Reilly also claimed that the problems on the baseball team extended to other teams, as well. Reilly painted a picture of an athletic program in shambles, with very low morale. This from a program that was just coming off a trip to the College World Series. Additionally, SI picked Arkansas as their preseason #24 pick in the very same article that Reilly smeared The Citadel. A couple weeks later, that beaten down, low morale football team went out to Fayetteville and beat the Razorbacks. In fact, we shut them completely down, not even allowing them a TD.

Reilly's sole sources were two baseball players who quit the team, and then claimed later that they had been hazed. Likely when somebody back in their hometowns asserted that they quit because they couldn't hack it. That's usually where the hazing complaints come from.

You know it was a hack job, Appaholic.

Bench, next time me and Citdog are in Boone we will not affectionately call up to you at the parking garage. Instead we will pee on it, then walk upstairs, drink your beer and ravish those hogs you call women.

Fine, but I'm drawing the line at you guys throwing a blanket party for me. Unless there's another kind, one where we lay down on it instead and share a warm, hairy embrace

Folks, the dog obviously suffers from a sort of Stockholm Syndrome with regards to the institution, probably as a result a severe anal trauma most likely put upon him as a plebe by Shannon Faulkner or another she-male of the day.

A little empathy could go a long way with these facts in mind. Poor little guy. :(

So I know this is nearly 3 years late, but I just came across is. CitDog...you're an idiot. As a grad, I too disliked the statements, however your facts are further off than my timing on this post.

Randy Moss was not a member of the '92 Marshall team....nor the '93 Marshall team, '94 Marshall team, or ''95 Marshall team. He didn't begin playing at Marshall until he transferred from Florida State (and after committing to Notre Dame, actually). He showed up in 1996.

PS-Chad Pennington wasn't on that team either...lol
