Northern Arizona Head Football Coach Jerome Souers has been awarded a one-year extension that will put him under contract to coach the Northern Arizona University football team through the 2010 season, extending the contract set to expire after the 2009 season. The contract was approved by the Arizona Board of Regents Thursday.
“I want to thank Dr. Haeger for his continued support,” said Souers. “We strive everyday as a staff to produce a football program that our campus, fans and alumni can be proud of.”
Entering his 12th year as head coach of the Northern Arizona football program, Souers is the dean of the Big Sky Conference coaches. NAU has posted three consecutive winning seasons, finishing third, fourth and fifth in the premier conference in the Football Championship Subdivision.
“I am happy the Board of Regents supported our decision given these challenging times, recognizing the need to continue the stability in our program,” said Athletics Director Jim Fallis. “It is a reward to Coach Souers for the job he has done with the program academically and the other challenges we have faced.”
The football program has shown a demonstrated record of improvement in its Academic Progress Rate (APR), recording a single-year APR of 951 and multi-year rate of 919 from the most recent statistics in 2007-08.
Under Souers NAU made a record-breaking NCAA I-AA Quarterfinal appearance in 2003 while winning the first Big Sky Conference title since 1978, recorded two playoff berths and posted seven winning seasons. During his 11-year tenure, Souers has coached 90 student-athletes to all-conference honors a combined 142 times with 34 first-team selections and 36 All-American accolades.

Cue the SoCon/CAA folks
Great to hear from NAU. They need to keep him around. He seems to be doing the right things.

Well, I know you're not his biggest fan Jon. I think the two IAs are setting us up for a losing season, which could mean the end of Souers, and hopefully mediocrity, at NAU.

Doh! Missed that little gem completely. It's from NAU's site, I expect a bit of homerism from them.

Mediocrity is the perfect word to describe Souers...
He will probably get a pass this year with the two BCS teams

I take it that going to class was not required for UNI athletes, since you clearly don't understand math.
Souers is 0-2 versus UNI. NAU is 1-3 all time versus UNI.

OK, but then there is the small matter of his 0-11 against his former employer, Montana.

You're confused Cap'n. That's UNI's record against Montana.

He can't type while he's using his fingers and toes to do math.

He won the Big Sky in 2003, he can't be to much of a lameduck coach yall.
A one year extension though? How will that affect recruiting?
I think last year's team was either overrated or they fell apart. The biggest issue was they played all the easier teams first half and all the toughest teams the second half - in big sky play.
for those that dont know, they went 4-0 and then 0-4.
PS going to a game in flagstaff is pretty fun road trip if u can make it, especially since its in a dome. Too bad for NAU, no close schools so they cant do much road trippn in the conf.

They shoulda gave him a 2-3 yr deal or nothin, 1 yr is dumb. Who wants to go to a school knowing the coach has a 1 yr deal n might be canned before you sign your letter of intent.

Bobby Hauck and all UM coaches of the past have been on year to year contracts and it hasn't hurt UM's recruiting. I read it that they gave him a 1 year extension to his existing contract which means he's there for the next two years so how is that any different than giving him a 2 year contract at the end of next season?
