A 22-year-old man, identified by police only as a University of Delaware football player, was injured Saturday night when he was stabbed during an altercation.
Newark police spokesman Cpl. Gerald Bryda said police were called to Christiana Hospital in response to a report that a stabbing victim was being treated there.
Arriving officers spoke with the victim, who told them that between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. he was walking in the area of East Cleveland Avenue near North Chapel Street when he was accosted by four men.
During the fight, the victim said he was stabbed in the right rib cage and neck.
A friend of his picked him up and drove him to the hospital, Bryda said.
The victim, whom police said was being uncooperative, was treated at the hospital and released.
