Thanks for posting that.

Watch the news report - this has to do with sports gambling and the prohibition by the NCAA of states that allow sports gambling (like Montana does) from hosting playoffs.

On one hand, I'd like to see the NCAA stand their ground on this issue.

However, I know that they'd never apply it to the big schools (since bowl games generally aren't played at a school's home site, plus they'd find some loophole around it anyway), so I'd hate to see it enforced on just part of the Division I teams.

The Bowl Games aren't NCAA games so it doesn't matter.

It really sucks because if enforced it will keep two of the top FCS facilities out of playoffs (Delaware and Montana). Both of which look really good in HD on ESPN and show that FCS isn't all 5,000 seat HS fields.

Bowl teams still have to abide by NCAA rules and regulations (academic eligibility, etc.).
So the NCAA could just as easily uphold such a ban on bowl games held in states with sports gambling.

But they never will, because they don't want to give up the money they make off them.
dumb.

it would be bad news for the FCS. it would hurt the big sky a ton. nobody else even has a very respectable stadium in the Sky. but i would hate to see del and mont. get knocked on this.

Even Montana State put on a decent show when they hosted and beat Furman.

The NCAA does not make a penny off of the "bowls" because they are not NCAA-sanctioned or sponsored...but the FCS playoffs are NCAA-sanctioned, so this would/could impact Montana and Delaware schools...

I call BS on that. The bowl system might not be officially "sanctioned". But I'm certain without a doubt that they make money off of it somewhere in the process.

Granted, I don't have conclusive evidence of that. But I've never seen any conclusive evidence that they DON'T make money off it either. I would be SHOCKED if the NCAA didn't get a cut of the TV and sponsorship money for each and every bowl game.

This would be a big loss. Montana one of the most recognizable FCS teams in the country. They have a great playoff hosting stadium. ANd since Montana makes the playoffs every year and usually host it would make things interesting as for where they would play.

Too bad and that really sucks if the NCAA doesn't come around on this issue. It will definitely hurt the fans and the team a lot but it won't hurt the Athletic program that much. The NCAA will be pulling two great sources of Revenue to help pay the nut for the playoffs and that seems like a bad idea on their part. One thing I can't see the State doing is caving in to these fucks at the NCAA. Why would the state cut a source of revenue to appease a non revenue event for the school and the state. Rules are needed and all but if they change it in midstream withour taking into consideration some of the States that are a part of the system then FUCK the puritans and their bullshit. Guess we're done watching home play off games here in Montana.

Especially since the NCAA will be paying for the transportation and doing that from a shrunken wallet.

Prepare to be SHOCKED!!!

According to the NCAA web site, they own the television rights to NO FOOTBALL GAMES unless it is an NCAA Championship (which as we know, bowl games are not NCAA Championships)
The NCAA owns the television rights to all 88 championship events. The NCAA does not own the rights to any regular season or conference tournament college athletic footage. In addition, the NCAA does not own the rights to any Division I-A football footage
Among those Championship events is the FCS playoffs and NC Game...but none of the Bowl games...

http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?ContentID=891

And call BS all you want...the NCAA budget shows no income from any bowl game...download and look at the various expense and revenue spreadsheets...if the NCAA is getting anything from the Bowl games, they are doing it under the table...

It'll hurt local businesses, or does Montana not have a sales tax on food & beverages? motels? WE have taxes on everything in NC, so it would really hurt the state to lose game weekends and associated revenues....

No sales tax in Montana brother. Don't you remember paying exactly what the price tag said on everything? Oh..wait...we were pretty drunk and I don't even remember that. Montanans fight very hard against any new tax and every time it is brought up about a sales tax it is defeated by a margin that is pretty impressive. When you moving out here again?

Reasons for Appa to Move to Western Montana

1- really laid back and cool attitude towards drunk hillbillies from back east
2- fokkers can drink
3- good looking chicks who drink
4- excellent tailgating
5- mountains
6- much like a grizzly sniffing out carion, Appa finds yet another hooker from SC all the way in montana
7- no sales tax....
8- ................

vsbills wrote:The NCAA rule I referenced in the story does not have any impact on bowl games, as most people in this thread have said. I can say that definitively, with NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osburn as my source. Bowl games are administered by the BCS, not the NCAA. Therefore they are not considered to be NCAA championship events, and the gambling rule only applies to NCAA championship events. It's the same deal with conference tournaments. The NCAA would like each conference to follow their sports gambling policy, but since the conference tournaments are run by the individual conferences, the rule does not apply

Personally, I'd be happy seeing Montana have to go on the road for the first round just in ONE year.... ;op

okay, so it has happened. Montana had first round road games in '82 (loss @ Idaho 7-21), '88 (loss @ Idaho 19-38), '97 (loss @ McNeese 14-19), and '98 (loss @ WIU 9-52). But I believe all those were back when they seeded at least half the bracket.

Just to change it up a bit. (doesn't really have anything to do with the gambling issue).

And speaking of change, I'd like to see UNI not choke in the playoffs. heh.
