The Jacksonville State football program crept closer to being ineligible for 2009 postseason play when the NCAA last week denied its waiver for the ban, the college sports authority confirmed today.

The NCAA Division I Committee on Academic Performance has upheld the postseason ban against the Gamecocks for not meeting academic standards.

JSU was notified of the decision May 12. It has 21 days from then to appeal the decision to a subcommittee of the Division I Board of Directors.

The school is in the process of making that appeal, sources have told The Star.

Athletic department officials have deferred all comment on the matter to university President Bill Meehan. Attempts to reach Meehan today have not been successful.

The JSU football program was subject to the postseason ban — as well as scholarship and practice time limitations — after failing to meet a minimum academic progress score, known as APR, for the third year in a row.
