VERMILLION, S.D. -- Joel Nielsen, the athletic director at The University of South Dakota, has announced that the Coyote football team will play at Northwestern University of the Big Ten in 2012.
The game will be held at Northwestern’s Ryan Field (capacity 47,130) in Evanston, Ill., which is located just outside of Chicago. Northwestern will be USD’s third Big Ten opponent on its future schedule, joining Minnesota (2010) and Wisconsin (2011).
“Adding Northwestern University to our 2012 football schedule provides USD with exposure in one of the biggest media markets in the country,” said Nielsen. “It’ll provide additional opportunities in terms of recruiting and promoting our university outside of the state of South Dakota.”
“Any time your institution can associate itself with a place as prestigious as Northwestern, it’s a win for the entire university,” said USD head football coach Ed Meierkort, who is a native of Chicago. “It’s very exciting for me as well, with me being a Chicago kid.”
