Jerry Moore keeps a worn piece of cardboard cut from the back of a notepad in his office desk. Written on it are four tenets that he heard at a Bud Wilkinson football clinic in 1962.

They are -- 1. Work harder than your players. 2. Know what you want to do. 3. Treat everyone fair. 4. Discipline 100 percent.

"Those are the first things I wrote down as a high-school football coach," said Moore, Appalachian State's coach. "That's been with me all along. Those things right there are life."

And that's the life for Moore, who has etched his name as one of the most highly regarded coaches in college football. He will be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in Raleigh tonight, part of a class of six.

Moore, who has 205 career victories and more wins than any other coach in ASU and Southern Conference history, grew up in football-rich Texas and knew from an early age that he wanted a career in athletics.

"I've always loved sports," said Moore, who will be 70 in July. "In grade school on, I couldn't wait for recess. That was the only thing I was decent at."

Moore's first season as a high-school football player was anything but. He was a freshman on the team in his hometown of Bonham, Texas, that went 0-10.

"We didn't win a game," Moore said. "If we won the coin toss, we celebrated because that was about the only good thing that was going to happen."

But a coaching change had a great impact on that team and influenced Moore significantly.

He's one of six inductees in the 2009 class and the only one that's not a native North Carolinian. Congratulations Coach Moore! :thumb:

I will even tip my hat to Jerry Moore. To not do so would be selfish and foolish. Best coach ASU will ever have. The guy is a class act. I hope Wagner will have as successful a career in the SoCon.
