As the result of the Oct. 17 Michigan game, an unintended scheduling conflict arose with the MEAC schedule. As a result, DSU will default a game with North Carolina A&T that was also scheduled for Oct. 17. This will appear in the 2009 regular season standings as a loss for DSU and a win for North Carolina A&T.

Agreed, it's absolutely ridiculous to screw over a conference mate to take a pay out. It sets a terrible precedent. I wonder if there is some sort of punishment the MEAC could impose beyond just the forfeited game?

In any case, I hope Michigan pounds the tar out of 'em. A score of 63-3 would be alright in my book.

Doesn't matter. It sets a precendent. What happens when The Shitadel decides to forego an asswhoopin' by ASU to take a bodybag game against Buffalo? THEN WHAT? :D :D :D

Every time DSU takes a step forward, like winning the MEAC, it takes two steps backward -- like this idiot move. No playoffs for the Hornets this year, with one conference loss "in the can" already.

BTW, my law partner (a Michigan fan) has a line on a couple of tix for the DSU-Michigan game. We'll probably trek on out to Ann Arbor to witness the slaughter.

I get your point, AZ, but that's a bad example. I'm not sure that's exactly a "bodybag" game in the same way Citadel vs., oh, say, U$C, would be.

Excellent point my friend. This makes both schools look bad, as well as the conference. A forfeit!? :wtf:

O don't like this move either. But DSU dropped their wrestling program recently, so I suspect that their athletic department is hurting for money. From what I've heard, the state is hurting for money, so DSU can't expect money from the state. I'd rather see a school do this than drop other sports programs.

The MEAC doesn't have a damn thing to do with this. This is all on Delaware's head. There is no specific language about this type of situation in the conference by-laws because this was never an issue before. Therefore the conference's hands are tied as to what can be done about this situation. Going forward, the by-laws will most likely be amended to address just such an issue.

:off: but, other college sports should thank there football teams for keeping them around, bc in some cases the money brought in by football fuels other teams

I think that is true in most cases. I'm sure many basketball programs make money too, but I think football is the financial lifeline for most other college sports.

MEAC reviews Delaware State's league forfeit to face Michigan

The commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is reviewing a decision by Delaware State to forfeit a league game next year because of a conflict with a big-money contest at Michigan. But the school said it does not plan to play its conference game with North Carolina A&T and fully expects some kind of fine from the MEAC.
"We've already settled it with North Carolina A&T that it will be their victory," said Candy Young-Sanders, the Delaware State senior women's administrator who was involved in trying to solve the scheduling issue. "You don't want to give the appearance that you are chasing money. However, when you have an opportunity (for a guarantee game) and you see the state is making cuts ...

"I'm sure there will be a reprimand of some sort. ... This hasn't happened before."

Asked if she expected the reprimand to include money, she said, "I'm sure."

MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas said he would talk with everybody in the league during his review. He declined to comment on whether he thought the league would try to have the game played or whether there would be punishment.

I hope they fine them EXACTLY the amount of the payout from Michigan.
