The University of Northern Colorado football team has shown in the past a need for speed at the wide receiver position. It finally might have it.

The Bears’ young group of receivers showed off their game-breaking potential in a full scrimmage to end spring drills on Tuesday at the Butler-Hancock practice fields.

The biggest eye-popper of the scrimmage was a wide receiver screen pass that redshirt freshman Denzel Hutchings took right up the middle of the field and blazed past everyone for an 85-yard touchdown reception.

It was one of five catches by UNC receivers that went for 25 yards or more, two of which went for touchdowns. The young guys led the way with freshman Patrick Walker leading the way with three catches for 61 yards, including a 25-yard catch-and-run on a screen and a 30-yard reception.

Redshirt freshman Alex Clark added the other touchdown catch with a 30-yarder.

Walker said the Bears plan to use that speed a lot this fall.

“We have been game-planning that since Day 1 and utilizing the guys we have in certain packages on offense to get the defense scared and keep them on their heels,” Walker said.

The receivers certainly kept an undermanned Bears secondary — missing stalwart safety Max Hewitt (shoulder) and playing with an ill Stephen Michon (strep) — on its toes Tuesday.

Even so, the secondary managed to come up with a pair of interceptions by cornerback Quincy Wofford and safety Chuks Nweke, who took his 95 yards for a touchdown.

UNC will be just good enough this year to make people get prepared to play them. I hope to see them win at least 4 games, but would not bet too much on that this year. Opening at Kansas, yikes.

Northern Colorado isnt gonna get close to conference title without:
1. Changing their uniforms
a. the design or
b. at least the sponsor/endorsment
2. Upgrading that stadium.

Recruits look at those kinda things

They are not up to 63 scholarships yet, two years ago they still only had 36. They have to be up to the 63 within the next couple years as I recall, as per their contract with the Big Sky Conference. Somebody down there really screwed up their plan to move up.

Someday they will compete and do it well I believe. When that will be, no way to tell yet.

The Big Sky has gotta good thing going with the tremendous success of Montana's program, the consistancy of Montana State's program & recently improving Eastern Washington, NAU & Weber State.

PSU will be in the picture CONSISTANLY in a few seasons or when they complete their stadium renovation and they can get some stronger recruits. But Sac, Isu & Unc have to make some changes within theyre program. They must change the way the football PROGRAM does things and heavily encourage a winninf team.

Sac has gotta do something about attendance. Nice stadium, great city but they must advertise bc its a good team with good rivals in UC davis and Cal Poly. If they advertise,4 years down the line... I see them fighting for the title.

Nau is a good team with a solid support system but they just dont have the skill guys to win 7 conf games a year. I havent seen a good qb there since Murietta. They have gotta go DEEP in phoenix & so cal and get the guys with bad grades and prop 48 em'.

I enjoyed my experience in Greeley. Decent stadium that gets the job done. I didn't think it was bad. Their uniforms aren't bad either. One big plus for UNC is the hot coeds. I was not expecting to get the eye candy everywhere I looked.

I'll be rooting for the Bears this years.

Its kind of weird that the only two FCS stadiums I've been to are Texas Sts and Northern Colorados.

@ Slycat all the hotties at the football games arent even the half of em, take a walk around campus on a school day you'll enjoy it even more, ratio is for 1 guy there's 4 girls or something close to that at UNC.

BF, not sure how the color of the uniform effects the athlete's ability???? So if you put DD in a Griz uniform he will win the national championship, but if you put him in green and white uni's he will not win a game???

Honestly black falkin i dont see anything wrong with their uniforms at all. Navy blue with gold and white trim, seems to look and sound pretty badass to me. But i still say the coolest uniforms i have seen are the new army enforcer ones, they are sick!

Yes, and years ago it was as high as 6 females to 1 male in freshman classes.

It's a wonder that school ever manages to recruit football players.

You ought to see the ladies tennis team.

Wonder why the south lawns of the resident halls on the west campus is known as "Turner Beach?"

Yeah not many people in Sac care about seeing Montana, MSU, Idaho State, Weber, ect... so that's the reason the attendance numbers are low. However, they have no problem getting people to attend when they play regional schools such as uc davis and Cal Poly. The problem is those are the only regional FCS schools so they will be the games that draw the most. When Sac State starts winning more games, attendance will increase.

Its not the colors man, you must think from a players perspective. UNC is endorsed by NEW BALANCE, so right off the bat you know they have sub standard cleats bc Nike makes the best skill position cleats. They're colors are fine its just the uniform, them must up the design bc it changes the player mentality when you know your being taken care of.

When you see the athletic department fixin up the stadium here and there ( even very small fixes) you start to get a sense of confidense and school pride, and when your uniform design is changed and the team gets a new look.. you feel good.

A primarily black helmet with light to medium camo coverage wouldve been best for that uniform. btw, I bet their play will increase in coming seasons.
