Moving on through the stretch, leading on to the conference title, the race seems to have thickened a bit. Montana State is still clearly the team to beat but Montana and UC Davis are emerging as legitimate contenders to the Bobcats path to the title. A three team race as we enter the month of November this weekend. Here are this week's power rankings (last week in parenthesis). All are my opinion only. Here they are.
1. Montana State (1)---Last week won at Cal Poly 34-17, this week at Northern Colorado---Last week the Bobcats dispatched with one of the conference upstarts in the Mustangs and this week, they get the other upstart in the Bears. Both on the road for the Bobcats. But they are not showing and signs of slowing down.
2. Montana (2)---Last week won at Sacramento State 49-35, this week at Weber State---The Grizzlies went into the beehive and took the Hornets out of their game for a solid road statement win to keep pace with their rivals. Still undefeated across the board, they head on the road again, this time to maybe an easier opponent?
3. UC Davis (3)---Last week won at Northern Colorado 27-16, this week Idaho State at home---The Aggies headed out on the road, hoping to dash the dreams of one of the conference darlings, and did just that to remain undefeated in conference play and keep tabs on the leaders. They come home, hoping to keep things going.
4. Northern Arizona (6)---Last week won at Idaho State 31-18, this week Idaho at home---The Lumberjacks finally got back to their winning ways with a strong road win in one of the tougher places to play in the conference. They return home this weekend for a Friday night game against a reeling Vandals squad.
5. Sacramento State (4)---Last week lost to Montana at home 49-35, this week at Eastern Washington---The Hornets were poised to make a statement and show everyone why they are wanting to leave the FCS. Then they tripped and landed right on their face. Trying to get back in the race they hit the road for what may be a tough game.
6. Northern Colorado (5)--Last week lost at home to UC Davis 27-16, this week Montana State at home---The Bears continue to scare almost everyone they play. They stayed with on of the conference's heavyweights last week at home. This week they bring in the top dog, the Bobcats. They will try to put a scare in them.
7. Eastern Washington (9)---Last week won at Weber State 23-20, this week Sacramento State at home---Don't look now but the Eagles are currently 3-1 in conference play. It helps, though when your wins are over Portland State, Idaho and Weber State. A win this week over the Hornets would establish credibility to title hopes.
8. Idaho (10)---Last week beat Portland State at home 45-6, this week at Northern Arizona---Can the Vandals right the ship and make some noise in the stretch run. They did what they needed to do in dispatching the bottom team at home last week. But this week is a challenge, but a win would vault them back to contention.
9. Idaho State (7)---Last week lost to Northern Arizona at home 31-18, this week at UC Davis---The Bengals were hoping for a good home win to keep their magical season alive, but they crashed on their home turf last week. They hit the road against one of the conference heavyweights this weekend, hoping to save face, and the season.
10. Cal Poly (8)--Last week lost to Montana State at home 34-17, this week Portland State at home---The Mustangs fought bravely against the top team in the conference last week but like everyone else, they ultimately fell off. They are hoping to turn this season into a special one and a win this weekend against the bottom team would be good.
11. Weber State (11)---Last week lost to Eastern Washington at home 23-20, this week Montana at home---Trying to avoid the bottom rung has been difficult for the Wildcats. After making sure they would not fall completely into the cellar, they could not get a home win against another bottom tier team. Now they bring in a strong opponent.
12. Portland State (12)---Last week lost at Idaho 45-6, this week at Cal Poly---Poor Vikings. They can't even break through in what seems to be a down year for the conference. A reeling Vandals team destroyed them last weekend. Now they head on the road again, this time to the conference darlings looking for a feel good win.
RECAP: 1, then 2-3 just right behind them, 4-6 a step behind, 7-11 bringing up the rear, 12 off the radar.
