NDSU football: Quarterback Troy Jackson dismissed from team; 3 other players suspended indefinitely after DUI arrests

http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/237652/
By: Jeff Kolpack, INFORUM
North Dakota State suspended three players from the football indefinitely and kicked another one off in one sweeping move today.

Head coach Craig Bohl said wide receiver Shamen Washington, quarterback Jose Mohler and defensive end Garrett Johnson need to think about things other than football. All three were arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

“They need to get their personal lives together,” Bohl said. “Playing football is a privilege, not a right, and the players need to realize they are held to a higher standard.”

Bohl said quarterback Troy Jackson was dismissed for off-the-field issues that were unrelated to his possession of marijuana charge in February.

For more on this story, see tomorrow's Forum.
2 QB's gone in one day, that's gonna hurt the program.

I'm expecting something more along the lines of Jackson's marijuana usage.

 Do these idiots realize what conference they are in? They must not *want* to win. I realize that the coach had to do, what he had to do. BUT daaamn! Does he wanna win a game or not?

What i would do is suspend them, but on some slick sh*t I would then tell them to still train on their own. And after everyone has forgetten about this bs, I would let em back on the team in after summer. That way, I ve disciplined them and got my stars back on the squad. :ugeek:

I look at this differently. BIG UPS and an atta boy for NDSU for not putting up with that kind of shit and holding their players to a higher level. I bet the other players on the team as well the other athletes in the school toe the line from here on out. Drastic, maybe but it shows that the University will not stand for this kind of behavior from the athletes that represent the school each and every time that they take to the field.

I agree with Grizzaholic.

Its sends a message to the players and the fans as to just what kind of a program they are running.

Kudos to NDSU.

Coach Richt? Phil Fulmer? Is that you?
http://thesportsculture.com/2008/08/04/ ... -football/
“Another day, another suspension.”

It’s gotten that bad in Athens. Georgia coach Mark Richt has suspended six players from playing in the Aug 30 season-opener (as the No. 1-ranked team in preseason polls). Here’s your laundry list of Dawgs serving suspension time in the dawg pound:
http://www.ajc.com/services/content/met ... perez.html
Coach Mark Richt said Perez, who has appeared in three games this season, will be suspended for the Bulldogs’ final two games —- Saturday’s against Georgia Tech, and a bowl game.
Richt is actually much more strict about substance related arrest than other SEC school... accounted for by the fact that 11 players got suspended from the team at some point during the 2008 season.

http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared ... _fret.html
Compare that to the recent arrests at Tennessee. Two players were arrested for possession of marijuana when they were pulled over by Knoxville cops while driving around town with a recruit on an official visit. Their punishment: Community service as dictated by coach Phillip Fulmer, ride-alongs with local police and some “unnamed punishment” within the football program. But no suspensions from competition.

I actually agree on this point, you don't get expelled form school for getting one DUI... JMU runs the three strike policy and UGA has moved to a very strict policy too (I believe its a two strike policy now). Six freshman were expelled at the beginning of this school year, prior to the start of class, for alcohol related offenses.

http://www.uga.edu/drugpol/

Minimum Sanctions for Alcohol and other Drug Violations

All students found in violation, through the University’s Judicial process, of Alcohol and Other Drug Related Misconduct (see Conduct Regulation IV) will receive:

1st violation – For possession (not consumption) of alcohol only - Alcohol awareness class and probation for six (6) months from the date of resolution.

1st violation – For consumption, use, distribution, and possession of alcohol OR use, possession, distribution of other drugs – Alcohol and Other Drug awareness class and probation for twelve (12) months from the date of resolution.

2nd offense while on probation – suspension from institution for current semester and 1 subsequent semester (Fall or Spring semesters only). Summer suspension may not be substituted for a Fall or Spring semester and will be included if suspension is initiated during Spring semester.
Seems some football programs have higher standards than the university, if the coach is up front about what he expects from the team... such as Richts policy of suspending players with alcohol related arrest for 10% of the season... then I have no problem.

Jackson was a screw up, the team is better off without him.

Johnson is the big deal in all of this, he was going to be a starter next year and a major contributor. I don't think he will get the boot but losing him will have an impact and will probably give the others more of a wake up call that nobody is safe if they mess up.

I still kind of hope that this was the wake up call Mohler needed, the kid has potential, he just needs to grow up.

Washington can leave for all I care, sounds like he was completely wasted, and not only made an embarassing decision but acted like a complete fool after the cops picked him up.

So What if he was wasted!? Most these guys have been wasted at one time or another, you guys have REALY gotta get this 'arm chair qb' mind set outta ur system.

Pay attention:
1.The guys on the team are more pissed than happy that these guys are suspended.
2.The coach only did this to keep his job. So get off his nuts, bc when it all boils down to it, he didnt have a choice.

Another thing, you guys are watching these player interviews on tv and believing them, have you ever notice the players' face while hes talking? He's bored and hesitant... know why? bc a player cant really say what he wants to say bc it may sound arrogant or politicaly incorrect. Half the stuff there saying is what simp ass fans, alumni, and the athletic director want to hear or want them to say.

Wake up!

I sure hope we never get kids as dumb as these few have been...they are bad for a good program...

And I'm pretty sure we'll never have a coach as bad as BF apprently would be...

Coach Bohl did the hard..but correct thing...

Shut up fucko. We all know you think you have the pulse of everything from all of the players to all of the fans, to the AD. They are, like it or not, part of an organization that has goals. They follow a leader/leaders much as a business does. The organization needs to please it's customers (fans) in order to achieve it maximum amount of money and recognition that they can. All things work together in the same fashion as a normal business operation. If an employee (the player) is fucking up then he answers the the guy steering the ship. The Captain makes choices to help effect a certain end result and if the player isn't helping in that regard then he pays the price. You are acting like a no account bitch, so again shut the fuck up and stop defending some guys that stepped across the line and have to pay the price for doing so.

A player on the team was at my place recently, he was hardly angry about how things went down. It seemed like he thought they got what they deserved. I don't know if he was too excited about the mandatory community service the entire team had to do because of what happend though.

Bohl really took this personally. He didn't have a choice but I think he would have done what he did regardless if he had to or not. He wants to run a clean program, he has said no to more than a few talented recruits because of character issues.

I don't care if a player gets wasted once and while, it is their right to drink if they are of age, but doing it and driving is a problem. The guy could have killed somebody if the police hadn't got to him first. The person that needs to wake up is whoever his friend is that let him drive home.

We've all had our problems like this. The low tolerance level Bohl has set is the right move to avoid an epidemic. Tha bad news for NDSU was the stupidity exhibited by some players; the good news is the consequences delivered.

Can the forum take that kind of action with BF for stupidity?

I hope not because I don't like to see people getting banned for their opinions but man he does have some depth to his stupid pool. If he wants to put it out there that there should be no accountability or responsibility due to the fact that these guys are football players then it is just refreshing to see that not one other former D1 player on this board including yourself has agreed with him. His sense of entitlement goes far beyond his abilities. I really do think that he has to be a board personality only and not a real person.

 You guys just dont seem to get it, do ya? You *must* be afraid of the truth or something.

+Players generally dont like giving interviews. fact
+The NDSU coach *had* to punish the players. fact
+He probably wishes they didnt do what they did, bc if he wanted to get rid of them beforehand, this was his chance to "CUT their ass!" as Wulff would say...
+The guy was smart to squint his face in the photo, making it hard for random people to recognize him.
+He made a mistake but its not the end of his career. fact

If you cant respect that, you dont understand the program.... thats as nice as I can put it for alot of you with sensitive ears.

As for a possible alter ego.. -negative, its all me. Raised in socal, refined in Cheney.

As for banning me.... Thats a pretty homo thing to do, banning a man for his opinion and for giving 'quality' insight. I dont respect that, I dont think ANY real man would.

Even though I don't agree with everything BF has said, that doesnt mean I don't understand where he's coming from or what he's trying to say. I don't condone getting wasted and trying to drive, and I don't think anybody on this board does. But BF does have some points.

Oh ya, and banning a dude just because his view points are different from yours, is pretty retarded, I thought that was the whole point of any discussion board is being able to debate, argue, talk, and give your own insight. Granted it might be a little bit out there, but still, some of yall need to relax. Take this internet shit way to serious, thats what ruins a board.

I don't want to see anyone banned because of their views. That is not the point of this board.
