Notre Dame to play first ever FCS team - Tennessee State in 2023

Post by dbackjon »

Notre Dame has scheduled an FCS opponent for the first time in program history, as the Fighting Irish announced on Tuesday they will welcome HBCU Tennessee State to Notre Dame Stadium on Sept. 2, 2023.

Adding the HBCU power to the schedule comes just four months after Notre Dame hired Marcus Freeman as the second Black coach in program history. Tennessee State is led by College Football Hall of Fame running back Eddie George. Both Freeman and George were All-Big Ten players at Ohio State, and George won the Buckeyes' sixth Heisman Trophy in 1995.

Good story line!

But Fordham and Holy Cross fans are furious about the oversight. “We’ll go all the way to the Vatican on this!” exclaimed one disappointed Crusader fan.

Interesting word choice by CBS. I guess "power" can mean "hasn't had a winning season since 2017 (6-5)?"

If these HBCUs were smart, theyd all collaborate and agree to not play any of these FBS schools looking to virtue signal for less than 2 million per game

and then agitate about yhe systemic racism in FBS vs FCS scheduling

I bet Alabama State could fleece the Tide or Auburn out of several million over 2-3 years

Fact: Notre Dame always ducked Fordham in the pre-WW II era. Knute Rockne once told Frank Cavanaugh that he would never schedule Fordham because Notre Dame could lose, and he had no intention of sharing the perception of Catholic school supremacy with any other program. He told the same thing to Slip Madigan, the St. Mary's College coach who had been a star for Rockne's Irish.

I think the only Catholic college that Rockne ever played was the harmless Detroit Mercy. ND did not add a major Catholic opponent until Boston College in 1975.
