Could Summit League Football happen?

With USD, and probably now soon to be UND in the Summit League, that would make 6 Football playing Summit League members, with only 3 in an auto-bid league. Could this be the kick to morph the GWFC into Summit League Football, with 8 members and qualify for auto-bid?

Members:
Western Illinois
North Dakota State
South Dakota State
Southern Utah
South Dakota
North Dakota

Cal Poly/UC-Davis could still be affiliate members

That would leave this for MVFC, with six members and still an auto-bid:

Northern Iowa
Missouri State
Southern Illinois
Illinois State
Indiana State
Youngstown State

I could see it happening, but I wonder how other Summit schools will feel? Especially with all-sports trophies important to a lot of schools who do not have football and/or do well in basketball.

Because you would get rolled.

And I hope that the BSC takes a very close look at getting SUU.

Well, they can lose just as good there too. :D

I'd rather be in a power conference like MVFC...

and since ORU, UMKC, IUPUI, IPFW have a lot of say in league politics... doubtful

It's a tough call. The MVC/Gateway/Summit relationship over the years has been solid. Might ruffle some feathers.

PROs:
* Summit gets to sponsor football with 6 all-sports members (and 2 affiliates)...similar process to the CAA/A10 situation.
* The 4 Dakota schools get to play all-sports in the same conference.

CONS:
* WIU, NDSU and SDSU leave the MVFC
* UCDavis and Cal Poly could always partner with the MVC, not the Summitt
* This change means the MVFC is at 6 and the Summit is at 6 with 2 affiliates who want to be together left over. It's dangerous to be sitting at 6 schools in the event 1 team leaves for all-sports membership in the other conference.

So if the Summit went through the motions and sponsored football, what happens if the MVC invites a school for all-sports membership, like NDSU? The Summit would be screwed depending on what happens with UCD and Cal Poly.

Other options?
* Maybe the Summit can use the 6 members (if UND joins) as leverage. They can simply say "if you invite UND, USD and SUU for football, we won't start a league.

The CAA will be at 14...why not the MVC? Especially if it means stability in knowing the MVC won't be left at only 6 schools:

Western Illinois
North Dakota State
South Dakota State
Southern Utah
South Dakota
North Dakota
Northern Iowa
Missouri State
Southern Illinois
Illinois State
Indiana State
Youngstown State
* Cal Poly
* UC Davis

Another options: A longshot that makes little sense, but what if there was a new conference: 6 team Summit and 6 team MVFC and both conferences agree to take 1 affiliate each to have 7 members. Could probably work into the contract that the other conferences affiliate member would switch conferences if say, the MVFC poached a Summit all-sports member.

I like our conference the way it is, but if anyone has to leave the league make it YSU and isu. What garbage schools to have in our conference

I dont think NDSU has any real desire to conference up with UND any time soon...

keeping in mind the cold-war-esque hostilities between the two schools (it's not a rivalry... it's a feud) I think NDSU likely would not mind watching UND twist in the wind looking for a conference. I am also pretty sure that NDSU isn't interested in UND finding anything approaching equal status or footing... after years of being the bastard stepson in ND (for funding and all sorts of other stuff) SU finally has a competitive advantage over "we've got hockey" and I think Gene Taylor and Joe Chapman would like to keep it that way.

the thinking, as i understand it in Bisonland is that UND fucked us when we went D-I (when we offered to go as 5 members of the NCC) and they bailed out... after some initial trouble finding a home... NDSU has flourished this decade... and now that UND is getting with the program... i think the attitude is "tough titties, you had your chance and flubbed it"

Long term, I'd like to see XDSU's end up in an "all sports MVC" where teams like Creighton didn't play football... (of course I'd love to see Wichita get a program going again)

Nobody wants to leave a respected conference like the MVFC for some upstart league with no autobid.

Welcome, DJH.

And for NDSU, SDSU and WIU, that would the lure.

But if Summit starts applying pressure to help out the non-autobid members, that could be a big pull for them.

The difference is A-10 football was basically the same members, they added some AEC schools as full members in the CAA so that they could have enough to switch it.

MVC & GWC are 2 separate football conferences, big difference. No one bails on an auto bid for a non auto bid. Sac St. isn't in the GWC/Big West. I'm sure the Summit could get one with the 6-8 members but no one is gonna be the first to jump from the MVC.

I thought if you are so many years playing together you will keep the autobid. That is the the talk with the CAA split. So if you haveat least x amount of years the new summit league would receive the autobid, no?

You want to get in the MVC and not just the MVFC? Who would leave the MVC? It is already 10 teams. I guess we could get rid of the non-footballs schools, but there goes any respect nationally for the conference as a basketball power house. That takes out Creighton, WSU, Bradley, and Evansville...and while Drake, MSU, and ISUB have football teams it is hard to consider them football schools.

In the best interests of the Valley it's best if it stays as is. I could maybe see moving ISUB out and adding SDSU, maybe. However, the distance for to just add NDSU for travel to and from Wichita, KS, Normal, IL (ISUR), Terra Haute, IN (ISUB), Springfield, MO (MSU), Evansville, IN (EU), Peoria, IL (Bradley) would be ridiculous travel for a mid major program and mid week games. The only games that wouldn't drain your athletic budget travel wise would be Creighton (Omaha, NE), Drake (Des Moines, IA), and UNI (Cedar Falls, IA). SDSU could maybe swing those games better than NDSU, but not by much.

The best thing (travel wise) for the DSU's and the Dakota schools would be getting together and trying to pull 2 of the Minnesota schools up and restart a form on the NCC. You would pretty much never get UNI to leave the MVC all sports or the MVFC.

NDSU's current conference travel -

St. George, Utah
Brookings, SD
Kansas City, MO
Tulsa, OK
Shreveport, LA
Macomb, IL
Suburban Detroit, MI
Indianapolis, IN
Fort Wayne, IN

the MVC would be a HUGE savings

as for the MVC - nobody leaves... 10 teams to 12... easy peasy.

as for the "new NCC" not possible... the MN legislature will not let anyone else go D-I, same with Nebraska...

Why would we, as a conference, want to add 2 more teams? I don't see the need for 2 more teams in the MVC either. Join the BSC.

lol...

the big griz conference??? they didn't want us back in 03... dunno that anything has changed in that regard. dunno why NDSU would want a conference travel schedule of Bozeman, Cheney, Missoula, Orem, Greely, Portland, Sactown and Flaggstaff... that's even worse than what they have now... by far.

i find it amusing that you are so perturbed by the DSU's joining MVC... geographically, it's a good fit... in terms of size and scope of the schools (largely public, around 12-15,000 students) seems to me to be a natural fit...

I don't want the conference bigger than 10 schools. It has nothing to do with what teams they are or how good they are. 10 teams is perfect for the conference

i would think that evansville would fit better in the OVC or the Horizon and Indiana State would be a better fit there too since they don't play football ;-)

Drake would also fit well in Horizon...

You want YSU and CPSLO in the same conference? They're only 2500 miles (and three cultures) apart.

CP and UCD would be football only. Its better than being Indy. La Tech & Hawaii are in an all sports conf. So is NJIT & Utah Valley.

I don't see the MVC wanting/letting its current FB schools joining a new Summit fb league, Summit/GWC

I really dislike conferences where teams don't play everyone. Its unfair to crown a conference champion when one school may have an easier schedule than the other. It only works IMO, if you have a championship game, such as the big 12 or SEC. But with the FCS playoff format, that is (thankfully) not necessary or realistic. 10 teams is about perfect.
