Will become co-DC at Texas. He was recently a finalist for the Boise job, as well.

Word is MSU's DC is gone as well. Huge blows for MSU.

It sounds like that's less clear now since Ioane might be a contender to replace Choate.

I actually heard that the Boise people flew to Bozeman to offer the job to Choate but he turned them down. He must have known this was in the process of happening.

I'm skeptical of that. Co-DC at Texas pays more than HC at MSU, but way less than HC at Boise.

Is co-DC at Texas (yes I understand "it's Texas") a better gig than a head coaching job at Boise?

I know that the plane that was carrying the Boise crew flew to Eugene from Bozeman to offer Avalos the HC job, not from Boise. :suspicious:

If Avalos was their choice all along, why would they stop off in Bozeman?

IMO "Yes". A coordinator gig at a P5 job, especially Texas, is more prestigious than a HC job at Boise.

Especially when Sarkisian paid out $1 million for a special teams coach. It was pointed out that there is only one assistant coach in the whole Pac-12 making $1 million. I'd be inclined to think Boise would not have been able to match it.

Boise's usually in the top-25, though. Plus, their new HC is getting $1.4 million.

So Choate will make almost Boise HC money by being a co-DC in Texas. Yeah, no brainer move.

I actually heard that the Boise people flew to Bozeman to offer the job to Choate but he turned them down. He must have known this was in the process of happening.
Everything I've read and heard is that they flew here to interview Choate and then flew there to interview Avalos. As I recall, they announced the hiring later. All of Choate's comments since then sound like he lost out to Avalos and that he would have taken the Boise job. As I recall, he said the first contact from Texas came on Wednesday after Boise fell through and on Friday it got serious (and finalized).

I suspect (this is all conjecture on my part) that the Boise job situation made him sit back and take stock, realize that if he wanted to continue moving up the ladder that he wasn't going to improve his resume much by staying here. Each year he had a noticeably better result and it would be hard to make big strides beyond where he is. Top 4 in the playoffs is hard to improve on (especially considering that NDSU will typically be on our side of the bracket). He could win some conference championships, might advance further in the playoffs, could improve his W/L record but it would be incremental improvement not the significant strides he'd made the last few years.

It probably also pointed out that major college AD's (and/or their influential fans) seem to value P5 coordinators more than FCS head coaches. He lost the Boise job to a coordinator (despite, from numerous sources, Chris Petersen advocating for him) and it seems to be a more popular route to a P5 head coaching job. When Texas called to see if he'd be interested, it sounds like he felt it would be better for his career.

I'd have liked for him to stay a couple more years, but he did a good job here and I can't fault him for moving on to a better job. I wish him good luck.

I hope we get a good replacement.

4-0 against the Griz
24-22 against all other competition

That would have gotten him fired in Missoula a year ago.

Let's see,
2019:
Choate/MSU 11-4 overall, 6-2 conf (Tied for 3rd), playoff semifinals
Booby/UM 10-4 overall, 6-2 conf (T3rd), playoff quarterfinals

2018:
Choate/MSU 8-5 overall, 5-3 conf (T4th), 2nd round
Booby/UM 6-5 overall, 4-4 conf (T6th), no playoffs

Is Bobby on the hot seat? If Choate would have been fired a year ago, it seems like Bobby must be barely hanging on. :coffee:

Lol. He’s just entering his 3rd year. What was Choad’s record after 3 years?

you said he'd have been fired a year ago. That was after the 2019 season above. If you're going to switch to after his third year, then it's 2018 above.

I'm so old I can remember when the Boise job was just another HC job in the Big Sky. Heck, I can even remember back when the Gonzaga basketball job was just another Big Sky job. :D

Yep. I remember going to conference games against Nevada-Reno and Boise when I was in college. I don't remember them very well, but I know I was at them.
