Just looked back...

Post by SuperHornet »

...to the NCAA.com article about how the spring FCS season will work. A 16-team tournament is planned including ELEVEN auto-bids because the MEAC has opted in for the playoffs after the 2020 Celebration Bowl was cancelled. Any fall games (hello, Austin Peay and their disaster of a fall season) will be factored into the committee process for the five remaining at-large bids. Apparently, the Ivy League is STILL sitting on their football playoffs bad/basketball playoffs good fence. Also, as of NOV, Ivy, NEC, Patriot, and Pioneer had not announced spring schedules. In fact, NO schedules appear on Yahoo! Sports as of today. The Championship Game remains in Frisco, TX, where it has been staged since 2010.

Does anyone see an issue with this? There may well be, as those with fall FBS wins may have an advantage for the at-large over teams playing spring-only/conference-only schedules....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I do. The committee will consider fall games although no one really jumps out as improving their resume except SFA who is on probation.

Looking at the standings kept at NCAA.com (Yahoo! is my usual source, but they haven't bothered with it this time), you might just be right, kalm. The fall season was a disaster for most FCS teams that took part, not just Austin Peay. NDSU had a good "peer" win, but as far as augmenting the resume, well, we expected them to be at or near the top, anyway, so that doesn't really count. SIU beat SEMO, so that's probably also a "push." Jacksonville State had an FBS win (of sorts), in that they beat Florida International an oh-fer school in a conference that struck out in the six bowls to which they were invited. Not much help there, IMO, and the rest of the OVU that played anything of a fall schedule was a disaster, as were the four SoCon schools that played in the fall. In the Southland, much of SFA's "success" was against mediocre D-II competition (not even the Tarleton States of the world), though they did open the campaign with a decent game against FBS UTEP, which had a downer of a COVID-riddled season that ended with the HC saving his job by firing both of his coordinators.

I guess you're right, kalm, in that the fall won't help anybody very much, and may well hurt them. Jax State might be the only school of the bunch to get any sort of a push from the fall, and it won't be all that much given the fact that FIU isn't all that great....

Hey, the Dodgers won the World Series!

We had no idea that there was going to be an 8 game season with a 16 team playoff. Who knew?

I'm just glad that, if McNeese had to be ineligible for post season play, it happened in 2020.

Could I ever be a star?
