After being knocked around a bit by the offense last week, the University of Central Arkansas defense came up with quite a counter-punch in the Bears' second football scrimmage of the spring Saturday.

The defense had the offense against the ropes for most of the 112-play controlled scrimmage at First Security Field at Estes Stadium, allowing only two touchdowns in open-field situations. It took the UCA offense almost an hour to score on a 50-yard scamper by Leonard Ceaser on a sweep. The other touchdown in the open-field portion occurred on a 5-yard pass from Nathan Dick to Brandon Kennemer after a 60-yard drive.

"I could see this coming about Wednesday when the defense began really dominating in practice," said UCA coach Clint Conque said. "But I would have been pretty concerned if the offense had gotten the upper-hand again after getting seven touchdowns and about 425 yards of offense last week.

"Our defense is playing fast with a lot of confidence. We are strong and deep up front and when you have that, those guys can make up for any blemishes you might have elsewhere. But on defense, 1 through 22, we are pretty experienced, pretty fast and no question we have talent."
