The University of St. Thomas announced Friday that the school has been invited to join the Division I Summit League, pending NCAA approval of the school’s waiver claim.

The NCAA requires a waiver to go directly from Division III to Division I without a stop at Division II. If the waiver is approved, the school will join the Summit League in 2021. The Tommies would then have two more years in the MIAC, which voted St. Thomas out of the conference earlier this year.

“Joining the Summit League would be a unique and exciting opportunity for St. Thomas, allowing us to significantly expand our impact and reach,” St. Thomas president Julie Sullivan said in the announcement. “It is a strong Midwest Division I conference that includes both public and private competitors.

What would happen to the sports (ice hockey, football) that aren’t sponsored by the Summit League?

The Summit League does not currently sponsor ice hockey or football. As a result, St. Thomas would actively pursue affiliate membership opportunities for these programs in other Division I conferences.

Incredibly good news for the Summit. They don’t draw very well but the new association and inevitable games with the Gophers might change that. I’m surprised about the waver but it looks like the NCAA recognizes the urgency for the summit and capabilities of the St.Thomas pocket book.

Wonder how this affects Augustana? They would be a good addition to the Summit as well. Both schools could be part of a new Summit non-scholarship football league. The pioneer could add a division or contribute a few members as well. That league is really spread out.

They have the money for football in the MVFC. Mentioned by a St Thomas person on the news tonight. . Great to have a close road game, maybe even Target Field.

They will be a good addition. Even if they go non scholly they will certainly play the Bison at least once. Even the University of Minnesota-Moorhead lasted 2 years on the Bison schedule before cancelling the series because it was non-competitive.

If they go full scholly they should fit right in with the MVFC.

St Thomas Was a founding member of the old NCC. Looks like the band is getting back together.

I spent some time looking at their program. They have a long way to go. They need find venues, athletes and a lot of money.

Augie only needs 2-3 million to get on the Summit/MVFC money spectrum. St Thomas, I don’t know, 3times that?

Augie is pretty well set with their facilities. They have been getting ready for a couple years now with a couple to go on their timeline. St Thomas needs the invitation now to get the waiver. The waiver will be conditional on meeting all the challenges satisfactorily. Augie has the advantage of getting ready first.

Augie wasnt a founding member of the old NCC but joined in the far distant pass. They should have a spot in the Summit as well. They fit right in.

I guess it's one of those location things where if you live nearby it provokes a different thought.

If I mention Chevy Chase, 99% of the country thinks of Fletch, but us 1%ers in DC know what it really is.

I know Chevy Chase, MD, but still don't know what you meant by your St Thomas post. The only other St Thomas I know of is in the Caribbean.

For the Delaware fans trying to learn something about this particular St Thomas they are competitive with a former Bison Coordinator as head coach.

This is the type of thing the participation trophy crowd worries about and serves as fair Warning for the common core football being played there and other places. For your own sakes fight the waiver:
Two years ago, the Tommies emasculated the St. Olaf football team 97-0. Caruso started his first string in the second half with the score already 64-0. They had scored every time they got the ball.

He ran trick plays and staged an onside kick. He refused to punt and made five of five fourth-down attempts. In the final insult, he handed the ball to an offensive lineman to rush for a touchdown with seven seconds remaining.

At least the dreaded fake field goal wasn’t used. That should give you some comfort.

They're not going to like the travel to San Diego. I don't know of ANYBODY in the Pioneer who likes THAT outlier trip....

With a possible 3 more non-scholarship programs - St Thomas, Augustana, Wisconsin Green Bay - there will be enough non-scholarship programs to split the Pioneer into two more manageable divisions or form a Summit non-scholarship league. This will leave two more travel friendly leagues.
