Memphis isn't exactly known for defense, so this is an… interesting hire.

He was at Arizona State prior to Memphis. Also, he's had two stops at Washington State so he does know the West. In 1999, he was at Idaho State.

Hey, if it makes Andy Thompson available to come back home to Missoula to be the DC, I'm all for it.

Everyone on the Memphis board was happy to see him go - there was a "Fire Chris Ball" thread from the AAC Championship game.

It sounds similar to when Portland State hired Nigel Burton, even though his defenses weren't all that great at Nevada. To be fair, Burton was run out of Portland more because of how he treated his players and not as much for W/L reasons, but still…
