QF - (6) Davis @ (3) EWU

One good thing about this year's playoff so far: this is only the second intraconference matchup (JMU/Delaware being the first). Now, there's a good chance we'll have two intraconference battles in the semis, but anyway…
Davis has been super-streaky scoring team all season as they've often gone on big runs after spotting the other team a modest lead. Their meeting with Eastern Washington in Cheney went in the reverse direction, however, as the Aggies allowed EWU to close the game on a 59-10 run after Davis took a 10-0 lead. I don't think this matchup will be
that ugly, especially since 2 Eagle defenders have gone down for the season in the meantime, but UCD's lack of sharp play against UNI suggests they won't pull the upset either.
Here's my assessment of the matchups & my pick for the game:
- Quarterbacks -- UC Davis
Running Backs - EWU
Receivers/TEs - UC Davis
Offensive Line - EWU
Defensive Line - EWU
Linebackers --- UC Davis
Secondary ---- EWU
Kicking ------ EWU
Punting ------ (push)
Return Teams - (push)
Kickoffs ------ UC Davis

Nice work.
We've been down as many as 11 starters total in various times this season but looking at this week's two-deep we seem to be getting healthier and the backups at those three positions have had quite a bit of playing time now.
Roldan Alcobendas is averaging 45.79 ypp which would place him #2 in FCS but he's not on the NCAA's stats page for some reason. He has 39 attempts and there are some on there with less. Perhaps they close the stats after the regular season on that site? Davis's punter is solid too but a few yards shy of that.
I would love a 14 point win but I think this will be a tight one.

Fettig & Calhoun are done for the season according to an article I read, just to clarify which two I was referring to.

EWU's punt coverage is questionable, so the net advantage is less than a yard. Davis also has a better In-20:Touchback ratio. So, in other words: Alcobendas is the better punter, but the overall punt teams are about equal.
(I always look at conference/team scorebook pages, just so you know, not NCAA stat rankings)

Yep and gotcha. Great use of the net stat with punting btw. As an aside, I'd love to see someone compile a yards per possession or points per possession stat. Or maybe even the same for TOP. It can be very telling when comparing defenses. Davis, for example has poor numbers but they might be top 20 defense when considering how many possessions and minutes they give opponents.
Sophomore Chris Ojoh has filled in great for Calhoun leading the team in tackles over the last 4 games at nearly 10 per game. Fettig is the bigger loss and the other starting safety Prunty has been banged up but is listed. DE Keenan Williams is questionable and that's where Nicholls attacked in the first half before we brought over help.
I like to use the conference and teams sites too. Depending on the school they can be very good.

14-14 at the half after Davis decided they didn't want to score inside the 5.

NAU played all three. Beat BBQ. Lost to EWU at home, UC-D on the road.
Hmmm - how many teams played 3 of the Quarterfinalists this year during the regular season?

Davis scores and gets a 2PC
29-28 Aggies with a minute+ to go
That's one of the very few times that 2PC gamble has worked this season.

Davis's defense decides to play flag football and EWU gets a long TD run. 2PC picked.
34-29 Eagles, 26 seconds left…

Sack fumble. Game over. Eags win 34-29.
The Aggie defense played great for 59 minutes, then played terrible on that final drive.

I'd be really, really pissed off by the collapse of the defense right at the end if I were a Cal Davis fan. That was ridiculous.

Tell that to New England, which apparently forgot about the possibility of someone pulling off a cognate of the Cal Play when out of convenient Hail Mary distance. The ONLY time to play the Prevent Defense is when it's obvious that the Hail Mary is coming. Letting an offense run wild under DBs playing 30-50 yards off the ball is inviting disaster. The only thing a Prevent Defense prevents is yourself from winning.
