Well, looks like he has his work cut out for him...
So much for the idea that he'll only move on to a P5 job.

Georgia Tech now has an opening. PJ retires after 40 years of coaching.

Could be a relatively good situation for Houston. The previous guy at Charlotte got fired despite his team improving from 1 win to 5 wins this year.

All the tweet replies with “poor JMU”..... and “he should stay at JMU and wait for something better”..... boo hoo
Some people need reminding that JMU to Charlotte is a bigger leap than The Citadel to JMU.

Is it? It's technically a higher level, I suppose, but Charlotte's average attendance this year was much closer to The Citadel's than it was to JMU's.

"I was contacted on Sunday by Charlotte 49ers athletic director Mike Hill," Houston told reporters. "We had a great conversation. I listened to him. I talked to him again on Tuesday. I told him I was interested in the job. Doesn't have anything to do with JMU.
"I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be the head coach here. I am still the head coach here."
"The facts are I've been offered a job. That's it," Houston said. "It is 2 1/2 hours from my parents, my family, and there's personal reasons why that's important to me. At the same time, this group here is very important to me also."

If Houston was motivated by attendance, then maybe that would be a valid point.
My own point is that if JMU fans have a hard time wondering why Houston would leave for Charlotte rather than waiting for a P5 opportunity to come along, all they need to do is look at his move from The Citadel to JMU for enlightenment

I assume you mean money. Houston's base salary at JMU is higher than Brad Lambert's was at Charlotte, however. The details of Houston's new contract haven't been released as far as I can find, but I figure it must be a bit bigger than Lambert's contract for any of this to make sense.

Houston wants to coach at a P5 school, and all that comes with it-
and everything he has done since Lenoir-Rhyne is specifically geared towards that
He'd take a pay cut to jump to a FBS that gives him the opportunity to turn another program around

Put down the fxcking meth pipe. JMU to Charlotte is damn-near suicide! It's ALWAYS better to dominate at FCS than to be a cellar-dwellar in the FBS. Hauck is a good coach imo, but UNLV FB has a problem that good coaching can't solve. Those replies are right, continue to dominate at the FCS level, something better will come.

When he makes a winner at Charlotte and then slides into Chapel Hill after Mack Brown retires (I give him 6 years) he's going to look like a genius
This is a good move -

UNC Charlotte has rescinded its offer to Houston, as Houston is schmoozing with ECU now.

He’s definitely trying to stay in or near NC.

Looks like a nice pay-day at ECU, $1.3 Million.

If his ultimate goal is UNC (I think it is) this is a bad way to go about it, IMO

Why? He's got a better chance at winning at ECU than he would at Charlotte.

First of all, producing a winner at ECU will be unremarkable. Its been done before. Doing it at Charlotte would be much more significant.
Second, I don't think you understand the dynamic between ECU and the two large Piedmont ACC schools. UNC and NCSU view ECU as inferior. ECU fans hate them. Anyone who produces a winner at ECU is not going to be welcome in Chapel Hill or Raleigh - period. It would be like The Citadel hiring Jamey Chadwell to replace Mike Houston.
Houston is going to get paid more, but ECU is the largest program he will ever coach in NC if he winds up being successful there.

Why can't Duke or Wake Forest be built into powerhouse programs in NC? Nothing is forever and UNC/NCSt aren't guaranteed to be the state's biggest boys forever.

What's interesting is that he won his national title with players recruited by previous coaches. After that one could construe things as declining even though he did just have one loss in finishing as runner up the next year. This year he lost four games. One could argue that there is a real question as to whether he could have sustained things at JMU.

Duke and Wake have perennially been same/same ECU when it comes to football- mediocrity punctuated by occasional winning seasons
All three of them have had good seasons but their commitment to football across most metrics is way behind UNC and State. Houston is from NC and he knows this. UNC and State haven’t been shooting the lights out in recent times either - but the perception is that they are just currently down, rather than mediocre by default.
UNC and NCSU might well be surpassed in football by Duke or Wake but it won’t be in ours or Houston’s lifetimes unless they completely change the paradigms between athletics to academics at those schools
