1R - San Diego @ Nicholls

San Diego has won 2 straight in this round, but those both came against marginal Big Sky teams that weren't playing well in November. Nicholls is different: they've won 4 in a row easily, they are the outright Southland champions, and they were borderline seed material. I figure Nicholls's suspect secondary will give up some points here—Anthony Lawrence leads FCS in efficiency rating & Michael Bandy leads FCS in receiving yards—but the Colonels' run-heavy offense matches up well against a Torero D that allowed an FCS-record 789 rushing yards to Davidson a couple weeks ago.

Here's my assessment of the matchups & my pick for the game:

      • Quarterbacks -- (push)

        Running Backs - Nicholls St.

        Receivers/TEs - San Diego

        Offensive Line - Nicholls St.

        Defensive Line - Nicholls St.

        Linebackers --- Nicholls St.

        Secondary ---- Nicholls St.

        Kicking ------ (push)

        Punting ------ San Diego

        Return Teams - San Diego

        Kickoffs ------ San Diego

        • San Diego 33-51 Nicholls St.

Highest scoring game. Both put up points but Nicholls simply scores more while USD covers the +15.

The only thing I may disagree with is the receivers thing. Nicholls State has really good receivers. I can't say I disagree for sure because I don't know anything about San Diego's receivers. But Nicholls State has some big time guys.

San Diego's Michael Bandy leads FCS in receiving with 1554 yards and 14 TDs. He had 202 against Harvard.

Without even having seen Bandy I would not be surprised if you think, after watching the game, that he's not as good as Nicholls State's Damion Jeanpiere or Dai'Jean Dixon. I would not be surprised if after watching the game you'd think Bandy wouldn't start for Nicholls State.

But we'll see.
