NFL draft picks from the FCS level of college football reached an all-time low last week with just six players taken in the seven rounds....

From 1994 through 2000, there were 165 players from the Division I-AA level drafted into the NFL. In 1996, it peaked again at 29, with 27 the next year and again two years later. Two years ago, there were 19 draft picks from the FCS. But then it was down to 13 in 2019 and just six this year.

This was a great thread to read through. I still don't know how Gil and Kalm kept a straight face for so long.

Yup, that is simply a glaring statistic. That's the kind of stat that you normally see followed by a mic drop or a /thread phrase. It certainly compares with the eyeball test when you consider players and teams we saw in the 80's and 90's compared to the teams we see today at this level. And that's not favorable to what we see today. :coffee:

And then there is the 1980's NDSU teams that could have beaten any 1980's I-AA team.

Which NDSU teams from the 80s, the one that tied Morningside?

The one that won 5 Titles. A mediocre Troy St team that lost it's coach after a 1984 Championship, nearly be I-AA winner GSU. Just because my team was DII, don't think we didn't follow GSU and I-AA at all. Troy St conference winner lost big to the Bison in the Title in 1985.

And just don't think because my team was I-AA that I didn't follow DII or other sports. My Morningside comment remains - a program that won all of 17 conference games (a .197 winning percentage) in the 80's tied (as opposed to "nearly beat") that mighty NDSU team that went on to win the title that year. If you can pick an outlier so can I. :coffee:

Ah the chain game. NDSU lost to Cal Poly in 1985 who in turn lost to CSU East Bay, who in turn lost to San Francisco State. So the 3-5-1 San Francisco State Gators > D2 national champ.

I am not saying that NDSU would beat them all, all the time, just saying they could beat them.

The Morningside game, NDSU Starting QB was out with a separated shoulder. The backup QB was nursing sore ribs and tried to play, made it 4 plays.
Third string QB Gary Barta, current Iowa AD, played most of the game. The Bison had a chance to win at the end, but Barta threw an INT at the 19 yard line. Barta was 3-12 for 49 yards and 2 ints, albeit, NDSU was an option team. Bentrim went on to win the first Harlan Hill award, and broke Walter Payton's career DII TD record. So there was a big talent drop at QB.

SF St - wonder if they did the gator chomp, ala Florida, at games?

A non-playoff Bison team that was not as good as the 1980s teams, beat a I-AA Playoff team, Montana, in Missoula in 2003.

Wasn't that right in the middle of 12 straight Big Sky championships for Montana? How did they do in the playoffs that year?

North Dakota State, the three-time defending national champion, has five players on practice squads, bringing its overall total to 11, the high among FCS programs.
Interesting. JMU had 13 at the start of training camp (school record)+ a 14th sign during camp. 7 made 53 man + 2-3 on practice squads = 9 or 10. Looks like 4-5 got cut.

Then there's 1986, JMU Ties Towson 7-7, and loses by 10, to GSU, 45-35. GSU giving up 35 points to a team that DII Towson held to 7. Towson loses 31=0 to Central State of Ohio, who loses to NDSU by 35-12. Not seeing much Defense in the GSU teams of the 1980's. Lost of offense playing teams not used to playing options teams.

Lost at home in the first round to some other mediocre team.

Must have been a down year for FCS ;)

Over the years the Hens feasted on option teams.

49-48, over a Dickinson-led Montana team to boot. In Missoula. :thumb:
