Longest active Div I HC. Laycock, 70, became W&M’s HC back in 1980.

Good for Jimmye. Hope he goes out with a winning season. Last year was brutal.

He deserves a good retirement send off...lots of NFL talent came from his program...

Not to diminish Laycock too much here, but would we ever see someone like this be around as long as he has anymore? He's averaged just a little over 6 wins per season over 38 years - that's basically 6-5 football over those years. He's made the playoffs in just 12 of those 38 years and only 7 playoff wins over that same time frame. He's a fantastic person and clearly a class guy, but would someone with such a modest W/L record and a very modest impact on the playoffs find himself employed for almost 4 decades anywhere else or even in this day and age?

Well, Cosgrove was HC at Maine for 23 seasons (1993-2015) with an overall record of 128-135, an avg of about 5.5 & 6 every season. He only made the playoffs 3 times. Granted 23 seasons isnt as long as 39, but still a long time.

Laycock is a prime example of a legendary coach who stayed a few seasons too long. He should have retired after the 2015 season, his last winning (and playoff) season, when they finished 8-3/6-2 regular season, 3 way tie for 1st in the CAA, 9-4 overall.

The last 2 seasons have been 5-6/3-5, and 2-9/0-8. Before the Laycock announcement I was predicting them 3-8/2-6. ‘Win one for the coach’ might get them 1 or 2 more wins, but I would be stunned if they finished with a winning record..

Is his wife’s name Ivana?

Because that would make me chuckle.

-Bob Ford, Albany, 41 seasons (1973-2013) (only last season 2013 was CAA, Albany wasn't Div I until 1999) (also HC St Lawrence 1965-1968).
-Jimmye Laycock, W&M 39 seasons (1980-2018).
-Tubby Raymond, UD, 36 seasons (1966-2001).
-Andy Tally, Villanova, 32 seasons (1985-2016) (also HC St Lawrence 1979-1983).
-Jack Cosgrove, Maine, 23 seasons (1993-2015) (also Colby College this season).
-Sean McDonnell, UNH, 20 seasons (1999-current).
