Tomorrow Big South making big announcement; EXPANSION?

The Big South say they are making a big announcement tomorrow. Possibly about expansion!?

My prediction? I'm not sure who is getting invited or who is starting football. MAYBE Campbell is gonna go full scholarship and join as a full football member since they're already in for other sports. Is Winthrop gonna start football? That would be a big deal.

I don't think it's to say Liberty is leaving. The FBS conference would've leaked that rumor already.

An invite??? Jacksonville?

Ok it's official, it's about "future membership". Someone is coming. I've heard North Alabama and West Georgia rumors. Also heard SC State might shock the MEAC and leave for BSC (I'd major support this).

My dark horse is Newberry. They announced major new stadium and athletic facility coming and their arch rival PC went D1 and is in Big South. Something tells me the Big South wants that intense rivalry and I'd love it.

You're just making names up now. Could be East South Carolina or Lower Tennessee is making a move. :kisswink:

I doubt very seriously it would be Jax or Campbell. I've been wrong before but they don't fit.

Campbell is already in for all sports but football. If they go full scholarship they can be in. I think it would be a great move.

Jacksonville always comes up but I agree, probably not them.

Campbell makes sense. But I saw on a D2 board that North Alabama is a very likely candidate.

I kinda hope Newberry is moving up. PC vs Newberry would be a good rivalry for the conference.

So not really big news...

http://www.foxsports.com/college-footba ... hip-091316
the two-conference partnership provides a guaranteed home for Kennesaw State, an Atlantic Sun member in other sports, and a potential guaranteed home for other football programs, including Atlantic Sun members Jacksonville and Stetson and Big South member Campbell. Those three play on the FCS level in the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League, and each program would join Big South football should it move to the scholarship level.

PC has done ok but I am guessing from conversations with some folks the move up has been a strain . I think newberry smartly seatscwhere they are

Well that was anticlimactic. So we open the door for other ASUN teams to join...if they want to. But no one has committed to doing it.

The only thing it really does is lock Kennesaw State in the Big South for football unless KSU left all sports for another conference.

I'm glad CCU got out of that dumpster fire of a conference.

Either Jax, Campbell or Stetson are looking to add scholarships and this gives them a home if they do. Big whoop.

Yeah. Winning those conference championships, getting home playoff games...all the success in baseball and golf must have been such a bore.

:ohno: Who here, and be honest, ever took the Big South seriously? Aside from CCU and Liberty nobody looked at the conference as a whole with any respect. Coastal has done will in football, baseball and golf. Winthrop is(was?) a good basketball school. Liberty stepped up it's football program with the rise of CCU, as did Charleston Southern. But none of that is long lasting. Coastal left, Liberty will be gone when/if a conference gives them a look. Charleston Southern could be a flash in the pan due to their administration.

I took the BS seriously. More so than the Sun Belt. But I like FCS.

Looking forward to the rest of the conference elevating its play. :thumb:

It never had much of a prayer to be honest. Not enough teams not spoken for by other conferences. The best shot for the Big South teams to have a solid conference was if it were to merge with the SoCon when Elon, AppSt and GSU left. But now that ETSU and Mercer are there, that's not gonna happen.

Wasn't ever gonna happen. My personal opinion ( and I know other's disagree) is that we should have offered Coastal ( and yes I know all the reason not too, but we still should have). IF we weren't taking CCU we sure weren't going to take Chuck South. PC and GWU just too close to FU and WC. and Liberty (oh well :? )

Relative to WHO? The Big South compared to the OVC or SoCon? Or compared to the Pioneer League, MEAC or others? You're dismissing Gardner Webb, who has a lot of big wins over some teams out of those conferences. You're dismissing former member Stony Brook. Who was as good as Coastal while they were here. We all know Kennesaw St is gonna be a power program soon. All the tools are in place. It may not be the SoCon or MVC. But if anything the BSC has been underrated.

That said....it is critical that the conference replace Coastal with a good program and keep Kennesaw. Liberty is what it is. They wanna go up. They'll need to be replaced also.

But to say the Big South has always been a joke or "dumpster fire"....sort of discredits all Coastals past success and would make one question exactly why in the hell they are moving up to FBS? Afterall....if you're LOSING to that team on Hwy 78 playing in a Junior High stadium...why should they be moving up to face FBS play every week?

Just sayin...

The best thing the Big South can do now that they have this ASUN deal....is to pressure USC Upstate to start football. You think Coastal got good quick!!??? USC Upstate sits in the mecca of HS football in this state. Their admissions are less restrictive than Furman or Wofford. Big campus and USC ties. They would immediately cripple Wofford and Furman recruiting in that area. Just my 2 cents. But a USC Upstate football program would quickly get as good as Coastal did and maybe better.

Second would be to get Winthrop to finally make the move and start football. Charlotte area. Good resources.

The South Carolina upstate is a hotbed of football and it's dominated in FCS by 2 smallish private schools in the SoCon with tough academic standards. The Big South has a deal that would get USC Upstate and Winthrop is already in. Just no football.

USC Upstate needs to seriously consider football. Within 5 years they'd be a playoff team.

The OVC's playoff record before JSU's recent success was abysmal and while the SoCon looked better last year, it still hasn't recovered from the loss of ASU and Georgia Southern. When was the last time a SoCon made it out of the quarters?

And list some of Gardner Webb's big wins and SB's playoff success.

Not trying to knock the Big South (BSC is the Big Sky) as regional success is solid first step but you might be over-selling things a bit here. At least from a national perspective.

The Big South is more than just football. Looking over it's history since 1983...I would say dumpster fire is accurate and even a slight exaggeration. It sucked ass before Coastal and i'm willing to wager that it'll go downhill now that Coastal is gone; it will rapidly plummet into the Earth if Liberty were to ever leave. Face it, Coastals football program was the rising tide and Liberty and CSU were the boats that it lifted.

I take a rather obtuse view (hopefully it will not torque folks the wrong way) -- I believe affiliations while still geographically centric are more and more endowment driven. Hence, ETSU, Mercer and VMI as opposed to others. Liberty & PC would leap to the top of the 'others' side of the ledger, but they still each generally register less than half of the endowments presented by ETSU, Mercer and VMI.

Winthrop will never start a football program. Every time the study the feasibility of one, it proves to costly and not enough return.

Well Big South football didn't exist until 2002. CSU, LU and Elon were Independent up until then. I'm only speaking of football. I wouldn't agree with that last statement. CCU was the best overall team from 2004 to present just based on yearly success. But Liberty was already a solid FCS program before 2002. And CSU was gonna rise anyway just as part of the slow but steady growth of the program.
