OGDEN — The coaching carousel can be rough on players and recruits, but recent coaching promotions in the college football ranks helped lead a talented quarterback to Weber State.
The Wildcats landed dual-threat California quarterback Dakota Miller from the 2016 recruiting class, who graduated high school early to enroll at Weber State this month and participate in spring camp.
Miller was previously committed to the University of Nevada — which plays in a football division higher than Weber State — but when Wolf Pack offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich left to become head coach at his alma mater Hawaii, it set a chain of events in motion that led to Miller’s spot at Nevada falling through.
“I felt Weber was the best situation for me,” Miller said. “No matter what, they were in touch with me and told me congratulations when I committed to Nevada. So it’s like a family here.”
Miller also had an offer from Utah State, but when Aggies offensive coordinator Josh Heupel left for the same position at Missouri, he never heard from USU again.
Within a week of the Nevada coaching changes, Miller called Weber State receivers coach Fesi Sitake, his main recruiting contact.
“I called Fesi and asked him if I still had a spot, and he said yes,” Miller said.
The left-hander from San Marcos, California stands 6 feet tall and was a dual-threat quarterback for Mission Hills High School. He is rated as a three-star prospect by both Scout and ESPN recruiting services, and in addition to Nevada and Utah State, held an offer from FCS powerhouse North Dakota State.
Miller reported throwing 34 touchdowns and running for nine more as a junior before a hernia sidelined him four games into his senior season. He said he’s now fully recovered and conditioning with the team.
A September 2015 article in the San Diego Union-Tribune described Miller as “extremely athletic” and that he was drawing interest from recruiters for possessing the “it factor.”
A rival head coach told the Union-Tribune that Miller is “a lefty with a strong arm, who can take off and run by you.”
Former Mission Hills teammate Martrel Holmes just completed his freshman season at Weber State. Miller said Holmes’ spot on the team was helpful, but it wasn’t the main reason he gave Sitake a call.
Miller also threw touchdowns at Mission Hills to highly-rated receiver and defensive back Troy Warner, who recently enrolled at BYU.
“He’s a great player, he’s a competitor,” Miller said about Warner. “He’ll play any position you ask him to. Even when he’s hurt, he’ll be out there playing. He’s just an all-around tough kid.”
The lefty will join Weber State’s quarterback competition in spring when he’ll vie for playing time with the likes of senior incumbent Jadrian Clark and Fremont High School alum Justin Shaw.
So far, he is pleased with his choice to attend Weber.
“Everything about the school … the day I got here, I knew I was going to like it,” Miller said. “From what I’ve seen, Jay Hill is a great coach, he’s a family-oriented guy and cares a lot about the team. I already love him as a coach.”
Good get for the Wildcats, I still believe Weber was a good QB away from being a really good team last year. Hopefully this kid comes in and tears it up
