According to football scoop:
James Madison (FCS – VA): Sources tell FootballScoop that The Citadel (FCS) head coach Mike Houston has been offered and is expected to accept the head coaching position at JMU. Houston served as the head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne (D-II – NC) for three seasons, going 7-3 in 2011, 9-3 in 2012, and 13-2 in 2013 before moving on to The Citadel where he put together a 9-4 season and FCS playoff appearance in year two leading the program.

It'd be awesome if Jamey Chadwell gets offered the job.

Chadwell is such a dick, he would probably take the job just so he could talk shit about Baptist College of Charleston.

He sh*t that bed already.
Doubtful he'd be able to recruit at El Cid, anyway.

A good development for JMU, not so much for The Citadel.

The Hauck story seems to be getting a little more traction. Apparently, there are a couple of points of contention with Houston that stand between him and a contract. Not sure what they are though.

Now it seems that Houston, Hauck and JMU OC Durden are all in the running and on the JMU campus today. Everyone at The Citadel thinks Houston is gone, but it seems there is a lot in play right now.

JMU beat writer has been tweeting updates. He had it that Houston was going to be the new HC, then had to backtrack to a wait and see mode..

Well, that would mean he will take us further than Withers, and actually win playoff games. Would mean at least 2-3 seasons of winning playoff games. I'll take that.

Welcome to the board.
You might want to go back and read previous threads first- CSU's inferiority complex and El Cid obsessions have already been well hashed out

Hey the guy looks like a good coach - successful at 2 different stops. Sure the timing sucks & will hurt JMU's recruiting for this year, but Withers wasn't Nick Saban.
He's got his work cut out for him this year to re-jumpstart their offense - they looked like a totally different team after Lee went down.

Jeff Durden is the UTC OC. Has been since 2013. Was the OC at JMU 04'-12'.

"....A final contract has not been signed, Bourne said, but JMU and Houston agreed on a binding "memorandum of understanding" with a base pay of $300,000 annually for five years. That’s not quite what Withers, a longtime assistant with major-college and NFL experience, took home. Withers made $325,000 per season, the most the school has ever paid a coach....."

Like I posted on the JMU board:
If you look at his defenses at UR the 6 years he's been DC it doesn't matter if you look at stats for All Games or Conference Only- it averages out to the same. Scoring defense and Total defense have avg 6.5 out of an avg of 11 teams in the CAA (CAA has avg about 11 teams over the last 6 seasons- 10 teams 2010, 11 teams 2011-2013, 12 teams 2014-2015). In other words his defenses have averaged average to sleightly below avg. But that is obviously way better than have seen the last 2 seasons...
I'll use stats from all games, because it averages out to the same as conference only. UR defense:
Scoring Defense/Total Defense
2010 6th/9th (out of 10 CAA teams)
2011 6th/7th (out of 11 CAA teams) (UR was 3-8/0-8 that year, so defense did did very well considering)
2012 4th/7th (Rocco becomes HC)
2013 8th/6th
2014 7th/3rd (out of 12 teams)
2015 8th/7th

One thing that will be interesting to see is how he handles the.... how should I put this... new environment... and all that entails?
Houston was at Lenoir-Rhyne which is similar to Wofford in terms of the kinds of students and athletes they have there - kids to whom saying "yes, sir" is natural. Then he coached at The Citadel where he was in a similar situation.
This will be his first time coaching in a place where you occasionally need to let things ride and not be a stern disciplinarian.
