With an emphasis on developing depth across the board, Appalachian State University football opens spring practice on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s is the first of 15 practices allowed by the NCAA over the next 30 days. The Mountaineers will spend the first three days in helmets and shorts, followed by four days in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts before full contact can begin on the eighth day of practice.

With 19-of-26 starters from last season’s 11-3 squad returning (eight on offense, nine on defense, two on special teams), Appalachian will place a premium on developing depth during spring ball. A total of 29 players are participating in their first spring practice at ASU.

The Mountaineers also have a number of players that are set to return to the field after suffering injuries last season. Most notably, defensive back Dominique McDuffie, running back Devon Moore and defensive lineman Tony Robertson have all been cleared to return to full action after recovering from injuries that caused them to apply for medical redshirts last season. Walter Payton Award-winning quarterback Armanti Edwards has also been cleared to return to practice but his time on the field will be limited, as the coaching staff will give sophomore DeAndre Presley the majority of the snaps at signal-caller.
