2015 FCS NFL Draft and Free Agent Prospects by NFL.com Grade

This was easy to do because you can copy and paste from the by conference query at http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/tracker?i ... aafootball" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; into a spreadsheet. First couple of screen shots show the 45 FCS prospects listed at NFL.com ranked, more or less, by NFL.com Grade. I say "more or less" because the summary for each conference only reports the Grade to 1 place to the right of the decimal point while if you click on an individual player you'll see it reported to 2 places. I went ahead and got the Grade to 2 places for the top 10 so I could rank those (highlighted yellow) so 11 through 45 aren't precisely ranked. Also I realize that the NFL.com Grade isn't the end all and whether someone gets drafted or not depends on a lot of other things including how much is available at each position. You can go to the web page I linked, click on the icon next to "Grade," and get a key on what the Grades mean.

The last screen shot is the number of prospects listed for each conference.

NFL.com is projecting 8 MVC players to be definitely drafted. I guess that's another indication of how strong a FCS league that was last year. One thing I find particularly interesting is that the four top graded FCS running back prospects all played in the MVC and, of course, are all projected as being drafted. The top four graded FCS running back prospects are 1) David Johnson of UNI, 2) Zach Zenner of USD, 3) Malcolm Agnew of SIU, and 4) John Crockett of NDSU.

Well what I learned from this exercise is that there is SOME but LIMITED predictability involved. I would've thought that all 10 of the top graded FCS players would've gone but instead it was 7 of 10. By my count 17 FCS players were drafted and more than half (9) were among the top 17 graded players. 12 of the 17 had a grade of 5.0 or higher.

BUT, there were three players that weren't even listed among the prospects when I made the list Wednesday night and who do not have a Grade who were drafted.

Also, since I'm a McNeese fan, I noticed something strange that can happen. McNeese offensive guard Antoine Everette was among the top 17 graded FCS players when I made my list. He was the second highest graded FCS offensive lineman (5.21 to Coastal Carolina center Chad Hamilton's 5.24). But today when I checked late in the draft to see what happened not only had he not been drafted but he was no longer even on the list of prospects. He disappeared. Don't know what's up with that.

McNeese's Antoine Everett re-appeared on the prospect list at some point after I made my last post. By my count 20 offensive guards were drafted and it had been the top 20 Graded according to NFL.com he'd have been in there because he was Graded 16th among offensive guards. But that's not the way it works.

Not as much of a "miss" as Northwestern State's Imoan Claiborne though. He was graded by NFL.com as 8th among safeties and projected by NFL.com to go in the 3rd or 4th round and didn't go.

Below is the 17 I got by going through the NFL.com list conference by conference and cutting and pasting:

One thing that happened is that fewer FCS players were drafted than NFL.com projected. That's even with three guys who were not graded being drafted.

Well I found out why McNeese's Antoine Everett disappeared from draft consideration. He was signed as a free agent by the Bucs and the article on it says he broke a bone in his foot during his pro day:
Everett, 6-foot-3 and 325 pounds, was projected as a late-round draft pick before he broke a bone in his foot at his pro day in March. He's expected to be fully recovered by the end of June, a month before the Bucs open preseason camp.
