Watuaga County Sheriff's Office served criminal warrants on three Appalachian State University students Thursday, March 5.
Senior building sciences major, Robert B. Simpkins, junior criminial justice major, Travis W. Dowda, and junior management major, Jeffrey A. Logan were all charged with felony first degree burglary, felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury, injury to real property and injury to personal property, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Len Hagaman said WCSO officers attempted to arrest Logan at his 11 a.m. class Thursday and also at his residence on Yosef Drive. Additionally, the officers attempted to arrest Dowda and Simpkins at their afternoon class Thursday.
The three voluntarily turned themselves in later at approximately 3 p.m. and were taken before the Watauga County Magistrate where they were given a $25,000 bond.
Hagaman said that they were released that same day after posting bond.
Simpkins and Dowda were both members of the Appalachian football team during the 2008 football season.
Dowda posted three interceptions, 30 tackles and four tackles for loss as a safety. After joining the team as a red shirt his freshman season, Dowda has played with the team since 2005.
Simpkins has been with the team since 2004, also as a redshirt freshman. He recorded 16 tackles during the 2008 season over the course of 13 games.

“Travis Dowda is suspended from the team pending the outcome of the case,” Assistant Athletics Director of Sports Information, Mike Flynn, said about the case.
Flynn said the decision was a collective one reached by Athletics Director Charlie Cobb and head football coach Jerry Moore.
If Dowda is ultimately cleared of the charges against him, he will be able to resume participation in football-related activities.
Flynn would not comment on Simpkins, as he is preparing to graduate and is no longer considered a member of the football team. \
Nip it.....nip it in the bud.....hate to see this....we deserve our lumps and he deserves jail time if he did it....

Hope App keeps this on their mind and doesn't let it get out of hand. One or two bad apples can spoil a bunch.

So does every other college student/grad student... but you don't see me out sticking people up
It's a shame when stuff like this happens, but it happens everywhere to every team at some point. Some crimes are worse than others, but if you look through the annals of collegiate football history, I can guarantee you that every school has had a player busted for something. The best solution as mentioned, deal with it and show that you don't tolerate this at your school or in your athletic program.

Well we just solved a bunch of unsolved crimes in the years that you were in school.

Not the motive at all.
Police said the three were at a party on Highway 421 when someone who lives at the home told them to leave. They left, but came back a short time later, officers said.
Dowda, Simpkins and Logan are accused of kicking in the door and damaging items in the house while trying to get to the person who kicked them out. Police said they then beat up the resident, who suffered a broken wrist and cuts to his chin.

Wait, so people should just accept having their homes broken into as part of living in a college town?

2007 we had a stand out WR that attempted to take $580 worth of food out of a grocery store. Wright kicked him off the team before it hit the papers.
Seems to me App is looking like UT right now. Sorry guys, but this kid should be gone with no consideration to the outcome of the legalities. He fucked up, royally.

Gotta agree with Catmom to a point on this one. Outside of a misidentification, he should be removed from the team regardless of his guilt inside a court of law....you are the company you keep, choose your friends better....the coaching staff is not obligated to meet the same burden of proof a court of law is....send a message.....

Sometimes doing the right thing is not knee jerking the thing. Montana as we all know has been through this and I believe the players were only suspended pending the evidence which in my mind is the right way to go. You'd hate to have your University pay out a large sum of it's precious resources for making a hasty decision. Think Duke Lacrosse for instance. There is no big reason to just boot them immediately until you are sure of the facts.

As I recall Bobby didn't hesitate to boot a couple/few in recent history.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Agreed. Quinton Freeman was booted off the team on hearsay. Supposedly threw a bottle in the police report, then the charged was dropped after he was kicked off the team because the cops didn't actually see it happen.
Even though it seemed unfair, Freeman later proved himself to be a piece of crap and committed other crimes.

I agree somewhat, but also, you gotta think about the image and the community as well.....as I was saying, if the player actually wasn't there and this was misidentification, then of course he shouldn't be removed...but, outside of that, he was there, something inappropriate took place (possibly criminal) and, whether he did something or not, he allowed himself to be associated with people who did...shows a lack of judgment...like our parents told us, you are judged by the crowd you run with.....surely, that's not criminal in and of itself, but a coach and school certainly have a right to sever that relationship preemptively to preserve their image.....not trying to pontificate, just being realistic....as a graduate of App, I don't want a jarhead like that representing my school....hell, after the Griz Challenge, I wished I had been wearing a Georgia Southern t-shirt that weekend..

(don't want to sound to hypocritical).

We don't disagree on the destination here Appa we are just taking different routes to get there. My route has a couple of off ramps in case of an emergency as I like have the options.
If we are judged by the company we keep then that goes a long way in explaining why teh city of Missoula has given me the stink eye ever since the Griz Challenge.

I cannot dispute their thought process......
