With the MEAC giving up Auto-bid, will the NCAA downsize, or just add another at-large?

No it won't. The playoffs are a big $$ drain for the NCAA. The less games, the less $$ lost.slulionsfan wrote:If anything, the playoffs will expand to 32 before it ever contracts. An extra at-large will be added to the mix which I think most agree would be an improvement over an autobid to the MEAC champ.
The garbage teams that get in tend to have auto's.BDKJMU wrote:That leaves only 10 AQ conferences. Any chance they take the field back down to 20? Would save $$ by taking the playoffs from 23 games back down to 19. Could always simply move it back to 24 if the MEAC, SWAC, or Ivy decided to participate.
123 teams this past season (not including UNCC).
-8 Ivy
-10 SWAC
-11 MEAC
= 94 teams eligible, 83 partial to full 63 scholly + the 11 team non scholly Pioneer.
Basically 23 spots for 83 teams +1 for the 11 team non scholly Pioneer. Going to be even more garbage teams getting in if they don't shrink the field back down to 20.

If it were a money drain for the NCAA, there never would have been expansion to 24, and D-II and D-III certainly wouldn't have 32 team brackets. Eight more FCS games isn't going to be an issue, especially when each game is placed out for bid. Individual schools may lose money but not the NCAA. Besides, my point was it will never go back to 20.BDKJMU wrote:No it won't. The playoffs are a big $$ drain for the NCAA. 20 team field 19 games.
24 team field 23 games.
32 team field 31 games.
The NCAA loses money on playoff games. Period. That shouldn't be that hard a concept to understand. The NCAA was forced to expand to at least 22 because of 11 auto bids, and 24 made more sense than 22.slulionsfan wrote:If it were a money drain for the NCAA, there never would have been expansion to 24, and D-II and D-III certainly wouldn't have 32 team brackets. Also the fiels expanded because it had too by tje by laws. The smallest the field can be now is 20

Once again, the NCAA doesn't lose anything. Individual programs, which are members of the NCAA, may lose some money, depending on their bid, but the NCAA as an entity does not. You're wrong. The NCAA plays for:slulionsfan wrote:Once again, the NCAA doesn't lose anything. Individual programs, which are members of the NCAA, may lose some money, depending on their bid, but the NCAA as an entity does not. Period.BDKJMU wrote:
