1-3 in the Playoffs, his "defenses" have never allowed less than 34 points in the playoffs, and was outscored an average of 44-31.

Perfect for Montana

Especially since he's keeping our Defensive Coordinator and D-line coach from the unit that lead the Big Sky in Defense last year. :thumb:

Oh, and he brought back our best recruiter in Justin Green. :)

Nowhere but up. :coffee:

Read some where his offense last year averaged 97 offensive plays and well over 500 yards of offense per game. 300 of it passing......

Well he won games at the equivalent of Northern Colorado. Somehow I think he'll be fine at UM :coffee:

Hell, DELANEY made the playoffs 2 out of his 3 seasons. It's not that hard to reach 9-10 wins in the Big Sky :?

Northern Colorado with MUCH higher admissions standards and tougher curriculum. :coffee:

I don't think it's an awful hire but I kind of don't get it. I think Montana's head coaching job is the top head coaching job in FCS and if it's not #1 as I think it is it's on a very short list of the top jobs. If you're going to go for D-II coaches I'd think there are a lot of them with more impressive performances out there. Not that Colorado School of the Mines is that bad. But it's not the first D-II program you look at and say, "WOW, that head coach has SURE done a good job!"

He was also coaching at the DII equivalent of Columbia.

I know you're just trolling, but still… try to be somewhat clever. :coffee:

Admission standards are high as well as the attrition rate. I would bet few Columbia students could cut it at Mines.

Of course it is a highly specialized school so I don't see many cutting it there.

Yeah, I'm not sure there's really a comparable school in FCS (engineering focused with incredibly strict admission standards). Mines was terrible before Stitt got there, though, just like Columbia is now.

I also think Stitts reputation among his peers was also a big factor. He, to say the least, was well recommended or so I hear.

Baldwin had one year of head coaching experience at DII CWU when Eastern hired him and no prior connections to A.D. Bill Chaves. As Victor suggests, there's much more to it.

Neither thrilled nor displeased since I have no idea how this hire will work out. He appears to be a good coach and will add some needed fire to the offense at Montana. So I will expect the best.

You only have to 'follow the money' to determine how the "top head coaching job in FCS" went to a former DII coach. The pool of candidates was bound to be impacted with the Montana starting base salary at $175,000. With potential perks it is probably maxed out somewhere shy of $250,000. That is not chump change but it is well short of what other Universities do offer. There are other DII coaches with superior records but with baggage. The administration went with the perceived safe choice of a solid coach with no apparent flaws.

Because of the facilities, fan support, and relative prestige I suspect the school does get more applicants than the dollar amounts would warrant. Yet Montana will always face the dilemma of seeing our successful coaches move on to greener pastures. Then the process begins again; Find a FBS assistant who'll take less money to get the "head" coach title, or find a promising head coach from the smaller divisions who is ready to move up.

JMU's old HC Mickey Matthews who was fired Nov 2013 was making 225k base, 250k with perks. New HC Withers has a 5 year contract at 325k a year, probably around 350k with perks. I believe he is the highest paid of all of I-AA.

Surprised to hear that Montana's base is only 175k. Would have expected it t be much higher. And it would have to be really loaded with incentives to reach 250k..
