Series: Tied at 1-1.
Last Meeting: Dec 8, 2012 - EWU won 51-35 in Cheney, WA (FCS Quarterfinals)
In a repeat of a 2012 quarterfinal game at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash., the fourth-seeded Eastern Washington University football team will host fifth-seeded Illinois State from Normal, Ill., on Saturday (Dec. 13) at 1:05 p.m. in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.

The game, carried live via ESPN3, will be rematch of Eastern's 51-35 victory over the Redbirds in 2012 when the two teams also squared off in the quarterfinal round. The game will also be carried live on 700-AM ESPN and via the web at http://www.700espn.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, with pre-game coverage starting 1 1/2 hours prior to kickoff.

The Eagles advanced with a 37-20 victory over Montana last Saturday at "The Inferno," where Eastern is 31-4 all-time and 8-2 in the playoffs. Illinois State was a 41-21 winner in the second round over Northern Iowa, who will host the Eagles in a regular season game in 2015 and visit EWU in 2016.

The Redbirds are now 11-1 after avenging their only loss of the season, a 42-28 setback in a Missouri Valley Football Conference game at UNI on Nov. 1. Despite sharing the league title with three-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State, the Bison were one of two teams ISU did not play this season in the 10-team league.

Illinois State is ranked in the top 16 in FCS in both offense and defense, both from a yards and points standpoint. Their offense averages 460.9 yards (20th) and 38.9 points (ninth) per game, while the defense allows just 320.9 yards (20th) and 19.1 points (13th).

"Just watching video last week of both Illinois State and Northern Iowa, we knew we were going to be playing a very good team if we could beat Montana," said Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin. "We understand that and we embrace it. They do a lot of things right, and you have to give them a lot of credit. There's a reason both teams are here as two of the top eight teams remaining, and it's not an accident. We'll just go let'r rip."

My best guess is 65-59 EWU in 3OT.

That's more like a one OT score.

I am assuming a MVFC defense can hold EWU to 45 in regulation.

Anyone know why the committee decided to not match ISU and NDSU since they didn't meet in the regular season? 8-)

I think both teams score in the 40's.

Bump. Eagle D needs to hold to a FG here.

Well that didn't happen. Good thing we're great at halftime adjustments; some are certainly going to be needed on defense.

Congrats to ISU... they brought it today, and EWU did not.

It's not over yet. Not likely, I'll grant you, SE. But ANYTHING is possible.

Praying for the cardiac arrest victim in the stands....

Any word on the fan who collapsed?

All I've heard is what the ESPN commentator mentioned: that the fan in question was a parent of an EWU player.

:-(

OK. The school confirms that the fan was a player's father, but won't ID him without the consent of the family.

Must be Coopers twin brother. But with twins there's the yin and yang issue: Cooper makes incredible highlight reel catches while Copper has aligator arms and drops routine passes. Image

I'm sure medical emergencies in stadiums occasionally happen, but I've never seen a game (college or pro) on TV stopped before for a medical emergency in the stands. Highly unusual. Hope whoever it was is alright..

This happens a lot. Especially in small towns in flyover country where the referee is the ambulance driver and owns the Trading Post.

When I said college or pro, I was talking NFL or Div I televised. Not small college or HS.

As I said in other threads: First time I'd seen ISU play this year. I think that is one very talented FCS team. I think they've got great players all over the place. For one thing I think they've got the best receiver I've seen playing for a FCS team all year. The quarterback looked is at least as good as any I've seen playing in the FCS all year. And yes I'm saying that at least during THAT game he looked at least as good as Adams to me. The running back might not be quite as good as the guy at UNI but he's really good. The offensive line is dominant. The defensive front is outstanding too.

Just an awful lot of talent for a FCS team, I think.
