They decided to go with an interim coach for a year instead of a new hire. Not having an AD is also reportedly a factor.

From OLive, courtesy of Ken Goe and citing Mike Lund, PSU athletics spokesman...

We do have a couple interviews scheduled this week for the AD position. James Sarra, Deputy AD from Texas-San Antonio will be in tomorrow. Another name will be released, sounds like tomorrow morning.

From the article J linked:
Lund said PSU wanted to give the new athletic director a chance to hire the football coach, and was unwilling to sacrifice this year's recruiting class while waiting to get an athletic director in place to begin a search.
Huh!?!

Then why fire Burton if they were just going to give a current coach the interim tag for the season? Makes no sense and it looks like PSU had no plan on how to handle the coaching job once they pulled the trigger on Burton...who only had one year left on his deal anyways. Great use of $180k by PSU admin.

It makes me think my theory about a potential player revolt against Burton might have some merit.

That would make more sense, and is the first time I heard that theory on the situation.

I mentioned it in the thread about him being fired. There've been a lot of rumors about him not being liked on the PSU board for at least a couple years now.

Of course, and they have dozens of eyewitnesses to prove it.

Gosh, they better be careful.
With that sort of thing the school might have trouble balancing the athletics budget.
Good thing they're on sound footing to start with.

Hey, leave them alone. It was a torrential downpour during that game...

First AD candidate interviewed says no to dropping football.

Also gets some good barbs at $800,000 man, David Hersh. "(T)his place gets hooked on the idea that it needs a promoter. This place doesn't need a promoter. It needs a coach. Let me worry about the promoting". Some of us thinking that Hersh had a hand in firing Burton, that comment raised some eyebrows.
